I was late to this party – I wasn’t listening to this as a kid (I was into jazz). But once I heard this (ages ago, in high school), I was sold completely. Straight Outta Compton and Fuck Tha Police send us headlong into a record that is a funky, rebellious, angry, socially conscious, pro-free speech bomb going off. The message and strength here is incredible.
My 2002 copy has 4 bonus tracks, all worthy of inclusion. Unquestionably influential.
Express Yourself is the one for me, one of my favourite ever hip-hop tracks.

Oooo yeah that’s another fun one! At first I thought it was Jackson 5 they sampled, but it was Charles Wright and the Watts 103 Street Rhythm Band’s tune (also called Express Yourself)! I was trying to keep the post to 80 words, though, otherwise I’d have listed that one and many others besides.
But he’s right, folks, Express Yourself is a fine tune indeed!

Haven’t listened to this one in a while! This, Public Enemy and Wu-Tang got me hooked on hip hop for a while… I tend to listen to Wu more often than the others, but that’s not to say they’re not great albums. Or important ones!

It’s still a thing! Roots, Wu-Tang, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul…

Yeah, I’m meaning there aren’t any new groups… those dudes have all been around a while!

Hm, good point! I’m struggling to think, at this late hour, of new rap GROUPS…. there’s gotta be some.. they can’t all be selfish bastards operating under their own names…

… there was Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All a few years ago (10!!), but I think that sorta died when Frank Ocean and Tyler, The Creator got big.

I don’t know much about them other than they had some hype around them.
