40 Drummers

This may seem like a lazy post, I dunno. But the bouncing ball of my thoughts goes like this: I sure do like drummers. And I love playing the drums. Hey, I turn 40 this year, I should see if I can think up 40 drummers I think are awesome, off the top of my head. Go!

It kind of reads like a who’s who. A lot of expected names, but hopefully a few you have to wonder about, or question. Hopefully none that are unknown to you. Why did I include them? Technical skills. Their drum sound and approach changed things for everyone else, somehow. They just plain ol’ kick ass on the traps.

This isn’t a Greatest Drummers Of All Time list, though it could arguably look like one. It’s not even aphabetical, or in order of importance to me. I’ve forgotten many people. I could switch out this drummer for that. I should have added Johnny Fay from the Hip (I love that guy’s drumming). Anyway. It’s just a list. A mental exercise. Feel free to tell me others I missed.

  1. Bill Bruford! And I’d throw Brian Downey in there too. Great feel.

    • Philthy Animal Taylor and Charlie Benante too! Let’s make this a 50 list. It’ll be neater!

      • But I won’t be 50 for another 10 years… Will it really be neater, to be older? I dunno. I like to think wisdom and knowledge come with age, but I’m turning 40 and I’m still pretty much the same git I was when I was 20. I am a diaper-change ninja now, though. I can do it anytime, anywhere, no matter how nasty. So, that’s a… skill? Maybe not wisdom with age, though. Some people make babies at 20, so they’re ahead of me on that one.

Well, sure. We can add 10 more. HMO votes for:

        Bill Bruford
        Brian Downey
        Philthy Animal Taylor
        Charlie Benante

        And I say:

        Johnny Fay

and since we have Vinny Appice, we’d better have Carmine too!

Ooo and we better throw in Vinnie Paul.

So there’s 7. We need 3 more. Get yer comments in now to round out this list HMO thinks should be 50!

  2. Hawksley’s a drummer, and he’s awesome. I don’t know if he’s awesome at drumming because what do I know about such things?
