Morphine – Yes

Ah, Morphine. Such an amazing band. A true shame when Mark Sandman died of a heart attack in 1999. They disbanded after that, and right at the peak of their powers. A great act cut short. True, they’ve kept things going but is it ever the same?

I was rocking this CD today, so here I am to tell you that you need to hear it too!

Honey White rocks hard, just get yer freak on let’s go! I first heard this on a (then current) CMJ compilation. Scratch plods along, slinky as hell. Radar picks up the pace a bit, and adds some menace. This is a very muscular song.

Whisper is a jazzy, late-night rainy city streets sort of song. Gorgeous. Yes is a brilliant, jazzy number about life choices. All Your Way is fairly trippy, playing with the tuning pegs and rocking along nicely enough.

Super Sex has weird, phoned-in sounding vocals and is a barely controlled jazz rock freak out. It just builds and builds. Awesome. I Had My Chance slows things down and goes jazzy slinky again. The Jury is an odd, spkoen word art piece, over a noodly sax line.

Sharks ramps the speed back up with some satisfying rock and beat poetry spoken word bits. A crazy track that I love very much. Free Love’s intro sounds like Black Sabbath (to me), but it soon proves itself to be its own beast. Effects on the vocals and sax-heavy riff. Delicious!

And finally, we have (probably) my favourite track on the record. Gone For Good is a pretty, acoustic saying goodbye song. Knowing what we know now, this song takes on extra poignancy, but it’s still just gorgeous. For those of you playing the home game, this track also appeared on the 2 Days In The Valley soundtrack. You knew that already. Good job.

It’s simple: get you some of this. All of Morphine’s records are fantastic, and I’d recommend Yes to anyone.
