Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

I hadn’t spun this CD in a while. There’s just so much music I need to hear for the first time, let alone going back to a record I used to jam all the time. I shouldn’t have left it so long.

I remember buying this not long after it came out, itching for that funk rock as only the Chilis can do it, and also for an improvement over the previous effort, One Hot Minute. I should review that one here, too. Some day!

Anyway, I plugged this record in and it really is something great. Just like Mothers Milk or Blood Sugar Sex Magik, this is a definitive Chilis record. Every track is solid gold. Honestly, it plays like a bloody greatest hits (and some of them are greatest hits). Phenomenal.

I was going to go through it track by track, as seems to be my current way of writing up these things, but you know the sound, you know the vocal tricks and sound, you know the bass is gonna kick your ass. Guitars and drums are flying high and damn funky, everything is clicking and, for this record at least, all was very, very well in Chili World.

I’m just gonna print the track listing here. Trust me. If you don’t own this, you should. Now. Man, I had SUCH a good time blasting this one again!

Yeah this is a good album,I think we were all fooled with One Hot Minute!
The only song I remember is Aeroplane,is that what it’s called?
Hahaha…can’t even remember but that cd is buried somewhere in my basement.
I remember ordering Woodstock ppv when the Chili’s headlined and I remember when they came out they had light bulbs on top of there heads and I think Navarros kept glitching and than his equipment kept conking out.
I recall telling my bro check it out I payed for a shit show ppv ..hahahaha ….it was still cool but man the funk gods were not with them that night!

Sometimes it’s not the group, it’s the times and general attitudes towards music. There’s been lots of times I’ve loved new releases by bands I’ve like all along that got panned in the papers. Other times, the music really is just crap. I’ll be reviewing OHM shortly.

Oh man I remember the lightbulbs. What a bunch of goofs. I have One Hot Minute here, it’s never had the same playback. I’ll review it shortly, since now I’m intrigued.

In summer 1999, I saw some live outdoor show in Toronto with Moxy Früvous, Kim Stockwood, Jeff Healey, Moist, etc. The new Früvous record had just come out, so they said they’d sign it at the HMV tent after their set. As a joke, one of them added “we’ll also sign Californication by the Red Hot Chili Peppers” (which was also new at the time) and I thought “well, this will be a thing to own” so I bought the RHCP CD and made them sign it. They were good sports about it.
