Cartoon Metal

An interesting point came up over on Mike’s excellent site, about Disney branching out into different types of music in their films. Check out the comments from Stephen1001 for this post right here.

Perhaps my favourite recent example was in Monsters University, when the mighty Mastodon turns up (very briefly):

  1. that’s 3 seconds of brilliance!

Did you ever see the movie Bonjour Timothy? It was from New Zealand in the 90s (the lead is now playing one of the dwarves in The Hobbit movies) – but in an equally short 3 second quote, the female Canadian exchange student mentioned “the tragically hip – this great Canadian group.” Needless to say I gave the film a glowing review!

It probably happened before Shrek but I remember that being a movie with some jokes aimed directly at the adults that would sail right over the heads of the younger audiences. Nice to see there’s some tunes in cartoons for the parents now as well.

    • Yeah! MASTODON!!!

I have not seen Bonjour Timothy (nor heard of it til now). I’ll look for it, thanks!

As for cartoons aimed at parents, what do you think half of Bugs Bunny was? Watch it now and realize how much sailed right over our heads, as kids. 🙂

There’s another Hip reference, in a terrible movie starring the terrible Hayden Christianson, some dumb thing about him being able to go where he wants… Jumper? That’s my only guess, and if that’s wrong I can’t care to try again. It was terrible. Anyway, he’s in a campus bar and they’re playing Ahead By A Century on the soundsystem. It was the only good moment in an otherwise terrible movie starring the terrible Hayden Christianson. Did I say that already? Terrible.

Oh, and don’t forget them turning up very briefly as the Kingston curling team in Men With Brooms.

Oh, and Gord Downie has a small role in an ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT (cannot recommend it enough) film called One Week. Emm Gryner’s in that one too. Still so hot. But yeah, Gordie’s in there too.

      Liked by 1 person

      • Oh! And Trailer Park Boys, as well. Of course.

        • So you’re saying Hayden Christianson…
At the other end of the spectrum, Yes! The TTH curling team may or may not have been the reason I watched Men With Brooms (that and Leslie Nielsen of course).

I was really impressed with his One Week appearance – great line, “if you have to ask, you’re not”

One week might also have my favourite in-movie performance: Joel Plaskett as a busker. I only saw the film once but I remember finding that scene where he sings really moving.

And speaking of great movie scenes, Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he dressed up as a girl bunny?!

      • Yes, I’m saying Hayden Christianson is not my favourite. Oh please don’t flame me, internets! I’ve expressed an opinion and I know that NEVER happens on the internet but please! I want to LIVE! Haha

TTH in Men With Brooms was too brief, of course. Leslie Nielson, always a pleasure. Paul Gross actually did a good job. And don’t forget Molly Parker, I’ve always found that she’s an excellent actress in whatever role she takes on, and very easy on the eyes. Yes indeed.

I watched One Week and was blown away. Watched it again the next night, and have a few times since. It’s one of THOSE movies. And I am remiss for not mentioning Mr. Plaskett. Bad fan of Canadian music, BAD [slaps back of own hand]!

And no, I never did think of Bugs Bunny that way. I’ve heard that line of thinking before, but nope. Never did. Sorry, Bugs.

      • Opinions on the world wide web, why I never!

And just to confirm, the Bugs as girl question was a Wayne’s World quote – so I’ll reply just like Garth, no neither did I, just asking!

      • I know, imagine putting your own opinions on the internet. The shock! The horror! Actually, if you’ve been following along on 1537, he says there are only two nekkid women on the internet. I’d be willing to bet that those two women, who obviously have such low personal standards to begin with, were the ones to start this frightening trend.

Haha I’d forgotten that Wayne’s World thing. Man, it’s been ages since I’ve seen that film. I need to rectify that.

      • Just started following 1537 recently – a grand total of 2 nekkid women is an intriguing thesis!
And pardon my manners, I forgot to mention I appreciated the ‘yer favourites’ menu on your site, any nod to the hip is alright in my books.
        Enjoy the weekend!

        • Yeah, he said those two women take it in turns. Ha. I’ll bet they do (snicker snicker).

You noticed the Yer favourites! Yeah, that was totally Hip-inspired. If you spend some time in the “T” section of the Table of Contents, you’ll see I’ve actually slapped up quite about about TTH, over these years. I even tried a series of listening to all the albums in a row, which was awesome. But I think that was before the newest one came out, and I don’t see it in there, so now if ever there was an oversiiiiiiight, that would be one for sure! Gotta get on that…

  2. I have not seen Monsters U. I intend to, I liked the first one.

FYI we’ll be talking about Gordon Downie and his band being on the TPB in a few short days 😉

I remember flipping channels and seeing Sesame Street on, oh, about 15-20 years ago. I came in during a song, about math…then I realized the music was SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE by Black Sabbath!

    • Monsters U is… well, I dunno. The first one was way better. But you may like it, I dunno. Give ‘er!

I’ll go blow the dust off all my TPB DVDs and actually watch the damn things for the first time…

Sabbath on Sesame Street. Quick, hide the puppet bats and chickens!

      • Better get caught up on your TPB dude, or it’s SPOILER CITY! I tried to avoid serious spoilers, but still. If you don’t want to know anything, you shouldn’t read my series. It’s scheduled to begin Sunday! One day after your new mystery series!

        Personally, I hope it’s about cats…

      • I’ll start the TPB, I swear. Trouble is, we’re in Season 4 of the Game Of Thrones and really pretty hooked on it…

Will you be reviewing a whole season per post, or certain episodes, or what?

Also, Sunday would be one day BEFORE my new mystery series… 😉

Cats? Naw, we have two cats and neither of them are very musical. Not even their farts. When they ‘sing,’ it just sounds like cats. Neither of them are a Pavarotti or an Aretha. They’re pretty damn cute, though.
