The Music Of Cosmos

I picked up this vinyl on our anniversary trip last weekend, and it’s really, really cool. I’m a big fan of Cosmos (as are many people).

This record contains selections from the score of Carl Sagan’s Cosmos on PBS, with this release dated 1981 (one year after Cosmos aired). It’s listed on Discogs as Ambient, and that’s not too far off the mark. Classical music (by various orchestras) is mixed with contemporary artists (there’s a lot of Vangelis). It’s a great listen, top to bottom. The music in the series was well-chosen, and this disc has picked many great moments from it.

The packaging has cool write-up notes on the inside, along with pictures and production notes. Definitely a lot of reading fodder for those late night vinyl-listening sessions by the light of your lava lamp.

CDs of this album seem to go for a pretty penny, these days, so if you have one on CD you should KEEP IT!… or, send it to me, I’ll give it a good home. I got this LP for $2 in decent shape and I’m very happy it’s here. Cool beans!

    • I have to admit that that was not my intended effect, when writing up this post. But I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself! 😉 This is indeed a really sweet LP. Thanks, Value Village!

      • That’s the thing, sometimes the intended effect isn’t the actual!

But in all seriousness, this is a lovely find. I grew up on this show, and my own lovely wife bought me the new series on Blu-Ray for my birthday. I miss Carl but Neil DeGrasse-Tyson does a fantastic job with the show and CG effects.

        • Well that’s why the KMA is the gift that keeps on giving! Maybe I should change our tag-line from “Music Is The Lifeblood” to “Now Causing Boners!”

I still haven’t seen the re-do of Cosmos (I really really wanna) but I was so inspired by this LP that I’ve requested the DVD series of Sagan from the library. 🙂

          • You know what would be nice, if you could have a rotating tagline. That would be cool, but WP would probably install faulty versions of it for us until they get it right.

The redo of Cosmos is also on Netflix if you ever feel like trying that free month. All you gotta do is cancel before they charge you for the following month.

            • I know Scott changes his tag-line every now and again. It could be fun.

Hey did I ever tell you about the depths of my hatred for the new hairball version of text editor WP has coughed up? Last time I made the mistake of not going to the dashboard to edit a post and just went with their new one, it removed all the formatting and everything was in one giant paragraph! I had to revert to an older iteration of the post first, then make my edits the old way. Big steaming pile, man.

I’m not so sure about Netflix. Our month wouldn’t likely really be all that helpful – we’ve watched two movies in the past two nights, and that’s honestly the first time in MONTHS that that has happened. We just don’t sit and watch, all that often. We’d maybe see a couple of things and then the month would be done.

  2. Tag-line updated. It’s all Mike’s fault. 😉
