Google Translate

Other people came up with this idea of messing around with Google Translate, but I thought it was fun and wanted to give it a try.

You see, what you do is type in song lyrics in English, translate them into some other language, and then translate that language’s result back into English. Often to hilarious results.

The Eagles’ Take It Easy, done English-Croatian-English…

Actual Lyrics:

“Well, I’m running down the road
tryin’ to loosen my load
I’ve got seven women on my mind,
Four that wanna own me,
Two that wanna stone me,
One says she’s a friend of mine

Take it easy, take it easy
Don’t let the sound of your own wheels
drive you crazy

Lighten up while you still can
don’t even try to understand
Just find a place to make your stand
and take it easy”

Resulting Lyrics:

“Well, I’m running down the road
I’m trying to loosen your burden
I’ve got seven women on my mind,
The four who want to own me,
Two that I am stone,
One says that jemoj friend

Take it easy, take it easy
Do not let the sound of its wheels
Driving you mad

Relax while you still can
do not even try to understand
Just find a place to make your attitude
and only slowly”

Black Flag’s Rise Above, English-Punjabi-English…

Actual Lyrics:

“Jealous cowards try to control.
Rise above. We’re gonna rise above.

They distort what we say.
Rise above. We’re gonna rise above.

Try and stop what we do.
Rise above. We’re gonna rise above.

When they can’t do it themselves.
Rise above. We’re gonna rise above.

We are tired of your abuse.
Try to stop us, it’s no use.”

Resulting Lyrics:

“Cowards try to control jealousy.
Rise above. We realize the above increase .

They say that’s wrong.
Rise above. We realize the above increase.

Try it and we stopped.
Rise above. We realize the above increase.

When they do it themselves, may not.
Rise above. We realize the above increase.

We are tired of the abuse .
It is of no use to try to stop us.”

Oh man, this is fun. You should go to Google Translate and try it yourself!

  1. Where do u find this stuff???

    • I don’t even remember, honestly. Could be a meme?

But tonight we watched a youtube video of John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight, and someone had take the Frozen song and done this to it (they never said what language they used to mess with it), and then sang it. Funny. So, of course, I had to try it.

Interestingly, the lyrics to Metallica’s Enter Sandman stand up very very well against translation from some pretty out-there languages. So well, in fact, that I chose to not inclue the results in the post (it was one for consideration). It almost always translates back verbatim. Maybe I’ve just uncovered the secret to writing a hit song!

    • And I have to say, “Just find a place to make your attitude and only slowly” is a great life philosophy!

    • I also thought that “It is of no use to try to stop us.” is far more proper-sounding than Black Flag’s version.

  2. My cousin Denis is from Brazil – so obviously speaks Portuguese, but is fully fluent in English. I’m Facebook friends with him. He often posts in Portuguese and I have to throw that puppy into G Translate. Hilarious! I’ll even post the results to see if it’s right! We get a good laugh out of it.

    • When we lived in Montreal, my job often required I send mass emails to the entire office, notifications and all that jazz. It had to be English and French. I would try the French myself, then run my text through Babelfish (popular at the time), just to see how good my own attempt was. Often, I was nowhere near. So I’d send the Babelfish version and from the French coworkers I would often hear a mighty laugh. They loved when I did that – apparently, Babelfish sucked at French too.

  3. WHat the hell is a “jemoj”?

Good on you buddy for posting this, pretty funny. I may have to do something similar — sometimes Japanese imports come with mis-translated lyrics that are absolutely hilarious. Think I’ll have to keep this idea in mind for some Japanese lyric sheets.

  4. My next T-shirt will read:
“It is of no use to try to stop us.”
