Supergrass – Supergrass
Way back in the dusts of time, I had a Supergrass song called Caught By The Fuzz on a CMJ New Music compilation CD. That was the only experience I ever had with the band, as I never owned any of their albums. In my mind, I lumped them into that Brit wave of nasal and annoying pop rock bands in the 90s, which I generally avoided.
I recently found this self-titled effort for $2, and decided to give it a whirl. Certainly I’ve matured, right? Grown past such generalizations? Haha no probably not, but what the hell.
And what did I hear? This is happy pop party rock that has a real bounce to it. It also gets heavier at times, in a good way. The main thrust, though, is FUNKY, especially in the first few tracks. I hear elements of 70s Beatles, Stones, Iggy Pop…
There really isn’t a dud track here. I could list each one, but why? They’re all solid, perfectly-realized tracks.
Supergrass was an entirely satisfying album, and I’m glad I picked it up totally at random. It’ll get more spins here, for sure.
