Mack Stevens – At Rollin’ Rock
Sometimes, the dollar store coughs up gold. Like the genius 3CD Miles Davis box set I found there for $2, today I got 2 CDs of rockabilly for $2. I’ll get to both of them as I hear them.
First up was Mack Stevens. Just look at all of this majesty:
I texted James as soon as I found it, and he loved the ‘Savage & Raw’ at the top of the album cover. And is it savage and raw? Hell yes! It’s brilliant. Of course I had to bring it home! I love rockabilly, and had heard of the Rollin’ Rock label before, and this is exactly what you think it is…
As the liner notes inside indicate, this is “authentic greasy 1956 Texas sound,” recorded in Nevada making it the Las Vegas Stomp!
This is a total party CD. Mack’s a wild man, and the band plays with an aplomb that’s slightly unhinged and straining hard at its tethers. It really is quite a ride. I can’t pick favourite songs off here, they’re all great. I played it in the car on the way home and, now that it’s ripped into my iTunes, I can guarantee this is all I’m gonna be hearing today!
