Mack Stevens – At Rollin’ Rock

Sometimes, the dollar store coughs up gold. Like the genius 3CD Miles Davis box set I found there for $2, today I got 2 CDs of rockabilly for $2. I’ll get to both of them as I hear them.

First up was Mack Stevens. Just look at all of this majesty:

I texted James as soon as I found it, and he loved the ‘Savage & Raw’ at the top of the album cover. And is it savage and raw? Hell yes! It’s brilliant. Of course I had to bring it home! I love rockabilly, and had heard of the Rollin’ Rock label before, and this is exactly what you think it is…

As the liner notes inside indicate, this is  “authentic greasy 1956 Texas sound,” recorded in Nevada making it the Las Vegas Stomp!

This is a total party CD. Mack’s a wild man, and the band plays with an aplomb that’s slightly unhinged and straining hard at its tethers. It really is quite a ride. I can’t pick favourite songs off here, they’re all great. I played it in the car on the way home and, now that it’s ripped into my iTunes, I can guarantee this is all I’m gonna be hearing today!

  1. Wow, that cover is just….wow

  2. Man, that cover. I’d have bought it if I’d seen it. And its great to see you getting more pics up on your blog.

  3. Woah. This looks a treat. In fact, this one, Rockin’ Guitar Gal, Dangerous Man and Texas Heat all look like the type o’ albums I’d buy. If even just for the covers!

    • It’s brilliant! The cover is just the beginning.

If you dig around on the youtubes, I think most of the album is on there (though not all together in one folder or video, sadly). But here’s a couple to get you going…

  4. Do a $2 series….sounds like u have tons of em…..this was a good read…never heard of this…..Las Vegas Stomp(cool title)

    • Haha man, that’d be most of my collection from the past few years! I am a bargain shopper extraordinaire. I almost never pay full price for something, unless it’s a new release I really want. It’s almost all used, and mostly $2 from Value Village or the dollar store. Give ‘er!
