Big Shiny Tunes

Let me take you back to 1996…

Back in the day, and in a successful series that spanned many years, Much Music released compilation CDs called Big Shiny Tunes. They were full of the hits of the day. In fact, there were 14 editions of Big Shiny Tunes, two Big Shiny 90s, and one Big Shiny 80s!

From Wiki:

The Big Shiny Tunes albums are each thought to be composed of a combination of rock songs that are major hits by well-known artists, less successful songs by well-known artists and songs by more obscure artists, released in the same year as the albums’ publication. There are a combination of Canadian, British and American performers. One common feature among the selected artists is that they are attached to Universal Music, Warner Bros., EMI Music Canada, and/or MuchMusic, who come together to produce Big Shiny Tunes albums.

This edition I have here, Volume 1, was released in 1996 and holds a whole lots of music we all loved (or at least knew about) back then. What a time capsule!

Now, some of our international readers may not know too much about bands like Limblifter, Killjoys or Pluto, but suffice it to say they were Canadian bands that were popular here, at the time. I liked them then and, listening back to this CD now, I like them now!

There really isn’t much else to add about this CD, except I had a blast listening back through all of this stuff. For a full flavour of what Much included on their inaugural compilation CD, have a look at the track listing:

I Mother Earth – One More Astronaut
Bush X – Machinehead
Porno For Pyros – Tahitian Moon
Garbage – Queer
Marilyn Manson – Sweet Dreams
Fun Lovin’ Criminals – Scooby Snacks
No Doubt – Just A Girl
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Aeroplane
Sloan – The Good In Everyone
Better Than Ezra – King Of New Orleans
Limblifter – Tinfoil
Foo Fighters – Alone & Easy Target
Moist – Ophelia
radiohead – Just
Poe – Angry Johnny
Killjoys – Rave & Drool
Pluto – Paste
Beck – Novocane

Yeah, this was a lot of fun!

  2. These things I remember sold like hotcakes at Xmas! I never bought any as I had the albums I dug instead like that Sloan record with the sloppy trumpet and a baked out Edwin and his Scenery Fish deal….I perferred certain artists and I view comps like greatest hits sets…have a hard time getting into em….

  3. Lots of memories of this CD. As a new series, I had no idea how it would sell. It took off, that’s how! It was an easy way to get all those songs that a lot of people wanted, without buying the album.

    BST2 was even bigger.
