Bruce Springsteen – In Concert (Plugged)

1992 finds the Boss in concert at MTV and it’s a corker.

From the hilarious opener of Red Headed Woman to the gorgeous My Beautiful Reward, with lots of great renditions (both acoustic and electric) and some great soul-shouter exhortations to get the home audience to take their clothes off during Light Of Day, this disc has it all.

Bruce’s voice is in fantastic shape, the band does it up just right, and when it all ended, I found myself wishing they would just keep on playing for hours and hours.

Here’s all you need to know, past that:

Red Headed Woman / Better Days / Atlantic City / Darkness On The Edge Of Town / Man’s Job / Human Touch / Lucky Town / I Wish I Were Blind / Thunder Road / Light Of Day / If I Should Fall Behind / Living Proof / My Beautiful Reward.

  1. Ironically, most Springsteen fans consider this era the nadir of his career, but I agree that it’s an excellent live recording. You just have to get past the fact that it’s not the E Street Band accompanying him.

I became a fan around ’79/’80 but didn’t see him in concert until this tour. He was awesome (no surprise there). Thanks for showing an under-appreciated record some love.

    • I thought (and should have mentioned in the blurb, so thanks for mentioning it here) that the fact that it’s NOT the E Street Band is one of this record’s strengths. They’re BRILLIANT, no doubt, but stepping out of his comfort zone and playing with different musicians (and trying new things, as he did shaking up some of the versions here) is a sign of strength, not weakness. So it’s funny, that – I’ve never thought Springsteen had a nadir. He just goes from strength to strength.

Thanks for comenting, Rich! As for giving this one some love? That was easy – this record’s great! 🙂

  2. Seen this in stores, never bought it. So this is Lucky Town/the other album era?

  3. Love the track Better Days!

  4. Another one for me to go back and revisit …
