Screaming Trees – Sweet Oblivion
1992. The guys got lumped in with grunge, which I always thought was a shame – they’re more than that. It’s solid bluesy rock, very well-crafted tunes that stretch their legs and satisfy every time.
The reason I bought this CD, back in the day, was a tune called Nearly Lost You, which also later appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Singles. But the rest of ths CD turned out to be friggin’ great, too! On this record, they never had the aggression of the other grunge stuff. A highlight for me was always Mark Lanegan’s vocals, with that deeper, resonant timbre. So, a solid band with him singing? I’m in! And honestly, in 1992, this should ALL have been on the radio. It’s really smart music.
Now, this is a replacement copy for me (found for $2), so I don’t recall was like this but track #6 (For Celebrations Past) is listed as a bonus track.
This was a big record for me, in 1992. Super cool to hear it again.
