R.E.M. – Around The Sun

I’m better-acquainted with earlier (up to and including Automatic For The People) R.E.M., but I will definitely drop $2 to hear a newer record of theirs!

I don’t even know how to review this except to say it’s a collection of great tunes, perfect for later at night and in the background. That trademark R.E.M. sound is here, and Stipe’s voice, of course, is the hook on which all of this hangs.

As I discussed recently in a Watchmen review, I don’t have much time for drum machines, and on this record Bill Berry’s absence at the kit is noticeable. I also wasn’t much for the electronic blips and bleeps (sparse though they were) in Electron Blue.

But I loved the 1-2-3 punches of Make It All Okay / Final Straw / I Wanted To Be Wrong. Many of the other songs are solid R.E.M. songs – does that make sense?

Overall, and remember I’m not the biggest expert on more recent R.E.M., I’d say this is a decent record with a lot to like about it.

  1. Cool that u posted this I gotta get to work on a review when REM played Tbay on this tour!
    Thanks for shaking my brain!

  2. I’m not familiar with this one either, but big fan of their earlier stuff.

    • Well then you’d probably like this, then. After all, R.E.M. always sorta sounds like R.E.M. no matter what they try, so it’s pretty hard to go wrong. This is a good quiet one, for relaxing times.

  3. Crush With Eyeliner..another great track! Love the drive of the bass on that one!
