I got this disc because the song titles reminded me of my Mom’s jukebox. I didn’t look too closely at it, because it was so cheap… and later on, I come to find out, there’s a couple of reasons for it being so cheap. The first will be obvious (see game below). The second can be found at the * (at the bottom of the post).
No knocks against it, it’s still a lot of fun. But let’s test your musical knowledge and make a game of this, shall we?
Let’s play Spot The Cover Tune!
How many of the following are not original songs for the artists listed?
Surf City – Jan & Dean
Surfin’ Safari – Beach Boys*
Pipeline – The Chantays
C’mon And Swim – Bobby Freeman
Fun, Fun, Fun – Jan & Dean
Surfin’ Bird – The Trashmen*
Da Doo Ron Ron – The Crystals
The Little Old Lady (From Pasadena) – Jan & Dean
Wipe Out – The Surfaris
Beach Baby – The Regents
Little Honda – The Hondells
Do You Wanna Dance – Bobby Freeman
Help Me Rhonda – Jan & Dean
Surfer Girl – Beach Boys*
Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow – The Rivingtons
Ride The Wild Surf – Jan & Dean
Awarding one point per song, and extra points to those who know this stuff off the top of their head (not using Wiki)! So let’s see who knows their surf music!
Good luck folks!
* original recordings. All others are new stereo recordings performed by the original lead singer with one or more members of the original group.
So yep, you’ve surmised all of this correctly… Not only are most of these songs cover tunes, but only 3 songs here are even the full original recordings! Yeesh.
Surfin’ Bird! Man that is one of my favourite tunes from that whole era, and it’s in its original form!

That’s a cool one. We used to play Wipeout on my Mom’s jukebox and try to drum along on the table with our fingers.

Sadly, it’s past tense. HAD a jukebox. Sold it years ago. Wish she hadn’t, her collection of 60s 45s is sort of my inheiritance.
