Elastica’s Connection is up first, a cool band and a cool groove. I was never into Stone Roses, but I did always like Love Spreads (for the guitars and that infectious beat). Weezer’s Say It Ain’t So is totally cool, of course. Flaming Lips’ She Don’t Use Jelly is both a perfect fit for the mix and hilarious too.
And then we get a university staple for my group of weirdo friends, King Missile’s Detachable Penis. I still knew every word. Dinosaur Jr. offers up Just Like Heaven, which is a great upbeat J. Mascis jam. This CD says it was previously unavailable (for this 1996 comp). Filter’s Hey Man, Nice Shot is next. I was always on the fence for this one, good idea but too long. Of all the White Zombie songs, More Human Than Human wouldn’t have been the one I picked but no one ever asks me.
Sonic Youth is next with Sugar Kane, which is poppy slightly wonky fun. Porno For Pyros’ Pets is a staple, of course. A cool, smooth tune. Urge Overkill’s Positive Bleeding has a solid fist-pumper chorus. And then it’s SLOOOOOOAAAAAN!!!!! with the ever-wonderful Coax Me.
Throwing Muses is a total throwback for me (I’d forgotten all about them) with Bright Yellow Gun, and then the Killjoys punk rock pop it up with Today I Hate Everyone. Give ‘er! Lemonheads have a decent tune in Into Your Arms, and finally it’s Gandharvas’ First Day Of Spring, classic CanCon for sure.
You know what, for a 90s mix this kicked quite a bit of ass. What a flashback!
