For the past couple of days, I’ve introduced you to my two guitars. I was also remiss in not telling you what my lovely wife calls my two guitars: The Other Women. So there’s that.

Anyway, if you’ve been reading along, you’ll know that (way back) in 2007 I posted this big long post, wherein I gave a run-down of my guitar equipment. And in that post, I also talked about my amps, of which I had two. Well, I still have those same two today and they are still as awesome as ever!

The little Pignose is such a practical, fun little practice amp. You can take it anywhere, and if you’ve got batteries, you can go play in the park under a tree, or wail a solo at a campfire party… Not recommended to put any distortion through it, but for just noodling around wherever you are, this one’s a gem.

And the G-DEC? It is (quite possibly) the greatest practice amp ever. Mine’s the 15W (the 30W is tempting but this one’s far loud enough for my needs here). You can read all about it at that post link I provided above. I know it’s been updated in the years since, but this one has never come even close to being boring, or in need of replacement, for me! It’s got enough preset sounds and user-controlled settings to keep even a marginally-interested player going for hours and hours (and hours). I love it completely.

  1. The Other Woman? That woman must go by the name of Sloan!

  2. Nice ampage there. Been tempted to pick up one o’ them wee Pignose contraptions …

    • Thanks! I have been REALLY lucky with the guitar equipment I have here, it’s all awesome. I’ve heard other guys complaining about this or that with their stuff, I just plug in and play! So, well, either I’m really lucky or just easy to please! Haha.

The Pignose is a FANTASTIC practice amp. Take it anywhere. It’s so small, goes right in a backpack with tons of room left over for an extra sweater and your lunch. The sound is super clear for such a small speaker and, while it won’t blow you backwards with volume, it’s more than enough to noodle around on. Great for late night bedroom jam sessions, or hotel rooms, or… My only real complaint is there’s no headphone jack, so when my lovely wife finally says Enough! ‘cos it’s time to sleep (haha I’ll sleep when I’m dead) I just switch over to the G-DEC, it’s got the headphones all set to go!

      • Nice. The lack of earphone jack is a bummer, but guess there’s no real need for that given the size and the fact you have another. I’ve mulled this over as I need to pick up something smaller with some nice range – I’m using a Marshall 75 (reverb) most o’ the time with a back-up Kustom.

        • Well I bought this several years ago and haven’t had to look around at others (I hope this one lasts forever, it’s awesome!) So I have no idea what else is out there now. I know Danelectro used to make sweet little amps if you like that surf tone. I’m sure there’s a million. But I think I paid $99 CDN for this Pignose all those years ago (it’s $150 on our Amazon now) and it has stood up to years of abuse from me, and several cross-country moves. I haven’t even nicked the leather wrap yet! This one looks brand new still. Love love love.

I’ve had the good fortune to play through a couple of Marshall amps, in my day, and I call you a fortunate son! That 75 reverb is a sweet amp. And that Marshall tone… hot damn! I don’t know too much about Kustom amps – I’m gonna look them up!

          • The Marshall 75 is indeed a sweet amp. Got it real cheap from my buddy when he ‘upgraded’. The Kustom is a nice simple little thing …

Danelectro done a pretty nice little vintage amp – the Nifty Fifty. Wanted one o’ them big time. Dunno if they’re still around.

        • Oh, and will mention – the Pignose power cord is optional, doesn’t come with it. I remember at the time it being silly expensive versus just using one I had at home with the correct V to it. So yeah, I don’t have the official Pignose power cable, but it ain’t essential!

    • Ooo yeah, and if you open up that metal clasp on the side, the amp opens up on hinges and you maximize your volume!

  3. The pignose is such a great amp. Definitely a must.
