The Band

Already with this New Year system, I’ve heard a lot of records over the past few days and it has been an awesome time! The music’s playing fairly non-stop, and my head’s a-buzzin’ with all the goodness!

But next up in my list came the Band, and I decided that, since it was a Sunday listening session, I would leave it to them and keep it pure. After all of this, I didn’t want to dilute them with anything else.

The Band – Music From Big Pink*
The Band – The Band*

I cannot add meaningfully to the decades of slobbering scholarship and jibbering fandom that has grown up around this band, and these two records, so I won’t even try. I’ve started countless descriptive sentences, only to delete all of them because they are all understatement. It may seem like a cop-out to write-up these two albums in such a short, fairly uninformative paragraph, but listening through these two CDs today, with all bonus tracks as well, I was struck with only the thought that the love, admiration and adoration accorded these records is utterly, unquestionably justified. ESSENTIAL.

* My versions came as a 2CD set with bonus tracks, as pictured below, and for only about $10. I know!

I do recall! I have an original vinyl of Big Pink here too, it’s lovely!

As for the CD of The Band, I think you’ll find you’ll wish you had hurried! I looked up my 2CD set on the Amazons and it’s $14. Their price for just The Band was $9.25.

Oh I can wait. Joe’s Garage from Taranna? Not even ripped yet. Parcel from Amazon with Deep Purple that you notified me of? Just arrived. IT NEVER EVER EVER ENDS!

Dude it’s so true. And who wants to stop listening to old favourites just to listen to new music? Not me! I want it all…I want it all…I want it all!

The Band is awesome. I saw the Canada Walk of Fame show on Global this past December, where the Band were inducted. Only two members left! Robbie and Garth! I almost had tears of joy seeing them up there. My heart broke when Levon passed, so that montage they do of the Band’s history was especially moving.

I am truly diggin’ the new way on the KMA!

BTW, speaking of changes to the KMA, I have a question: is there a reason why you don’t have a proper avatar for the KMA, like using the image of the record player or something? Just askin’…

Thanks Sarca! You find the pics at the bottom OK?

Agreed on the Band. What a superlative bunch of players. A real shame death has to catch up to the greats too.

Ass for the avatar, there’s that goofy pic of my hiding behind my original ’72 copy of Exile. Does that not appear?

Yes, the pics show up just fine!

Hmm. Nope! Not even in the reader, do I see your goofy pic…just a WP logo. Go into the general settings of the KMA in the dashboard – do you have an icon? Is it the goofy pic?

I think they are two different things: Gravatar is for your personal WP account, and what you would use to comment, etc on others’ webpages. Each personal account can have more than one WP site, and have its own individual icon / avatar.

OK I think I have it sussed. I made the avatar the record pic from the top of our page. Weirdly, when Choosing The File, it would not let me go to the KMA Media library for the pic. I had to save it back to my desktop then re-upload it! Tedious. Anyway, now I don’t know whether my Exile photo will show up when I comment on a post (since I am logged in as me) or if this other one will. James has his set up to login under his own thing, so I don’t know what’ll happen to him. I guess we’ll find out!

I see the turntable next to keepsmealive in the top left corner! Lookin’ good. 🙂

Now, your keepsmealive account…do you see your exile avatar next to keepsmealive when you comment? Because all I see is a taupe-coloured quilt-like swatch thingy

Hm, that’s one of the default icons… It did say that it could take a few hours to update in their servers or something like that, so maybe we’ll just pull a Tragically Hip and “wait and see what tomorrow brings.”

One-two punches don’t come much better than the first two albums from The Band. Looks like you got a steal for $10. I hope you won’t mind me doing a little self-promotion by pointing out my own blog post on these albums (as part of my series on The Band from 2011). Hopefully I didn’t succumb to “slobbering scholarship and jibbering fandom.”

You said it Rich, these are knock-outs! I can’t even listen to them critically anymore, they are just THOSE records, the warm old friends that never ever ever let me down.

Fire away with the self-promotion, Rich! In all honesty, I should have linked to those myself! Your write-ups are what people need – reasonable and balanced and invested and smart. I’m the one more likely to jibber!

Fixed! We haven’t had this theme for very long, and it seems it had the Like feature shut off by default, and I never noticed. Thanks for pointing it out!

If anyone else’s Like is turned off on their sites, it’s under Dashboard/Settings/Sharing, at the bottom of the Sharing page is a toggle for turning it on an off.

Cool review and the term ‘jibbering fandom” should be used more…that’s why I’m on the crusade to bring back “noggin” to the masses!
