Grail List Addition For Aaron
Yup, I’m at it again, folks. This time it’s a request for everyone to keep your eyes peeled for Gojira – Terra Incognita (2000). It’s their first album (under the name Gojira, they’d been Godzilla before but had to change for obvious reasons). Discogs lists one new copy available, €200 ($278.49 CDN)! Our Canadian Amazon also lists a couple of them, starting at $185.75 for a used copy! So what we’re looking for, here, is a shop/someone who doesn’t know/care what they have and are selling it off at normal CD prices! Thanks folks!

Delightful pop-rock with tight instrumentations and fun lyrics. Something very Brit-pop about the whole thing… must just be all those jangly guitars and lovely melodies. Also, this has the greatest song title I’ve seen in ages: The Day The Trumpet Player Fell In Love, And Learned To Hate Men. Haha awesome. Highly enjoyable, light good times.
Marilyn Manson – Eat Me, Drink Me
I’m far more familiar with old Manson, up to (and including) Antichrist Superstar, then I drifted off. This still sounds like him, but it has lost a bit of its edge somehow. He’s still writing and saying things that no one else ever quite manages in the way he manages it. Even though some of it is pretty much 80s new wave, it’s still somehow as creepy as the old stuff.
Various – Current Vision
Lots of songs we know, here, and enough new stuff to make it fun (track list pic below). The highlight track for me was Chris Isaak’s Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing, a cool blues with those inimitable vocals. This is a cool mix of artists and songs.

Jings! That Gojira CD is mega-expensive! As for Manson, he was in that last season of Sons of Anarchy … a fair difference in him. I’ve never been a fan of his music, though I did dig the Mechanical Animals album from many moons ago.
… and good list o’ late night albums there. Particularly Vic and Leonard. I also need to dig out my copy of Mezzanine.

Yeah it’s nuts, that Gojira. Makes me wonder if they only printed so many of them, or something. Anyway, if anyone sees one, I wants it the precioussssssss!! 😉
I honestly hadn’t thought of Manson between the Rollins show and finding this CD for $2. It’s pretty good! I read a review of the new album (out last week) that called it the Mechanical Animals of this decade. For what Amazon reviews are worth!
I’m glad you like the list of late night records. I just went through my collection and said yeah, I’ve played THAT after the kids went to bed! Ooo, and that one! And that one… Oh man, I can listen to Leonard anytime. And definitely find your Mezzanine. I played it again recently and WOW. It’s timeless. Brilliant.

Here’s the Amazon review (for the Deluxe edition) that I mentioned:
“I’ve been following the band for 15 years now and I have enjoyed (and still enjoy) every album this band put out. I think that The Pale Emperor could be the Mechanical Animals of this decade. This is the bravest *musical* adventure the band went on since… dare I say 1998. Headbangers should look elsewhere unless they just want good music. Manson brings out his inner Jim Morrison here. This album cares less for that mid tempo verse/heavy chorus layout based around a guitar riff and focuses more on the music other than the distorted guitar. The music builds up and changes, it feels raw but very well produced. The album is full of interesting lyrical references, multi-layer vocal tracks doing whispers and different pitched voices singing along to the memorable melodies, rocking swing beats, classic blues style guitar riffs over cinematic atmospherics with some of the coolest sinister synthesizers since Holy Wood. A lot of those elements give this album that gothic-blues-rock n’ roll vibe that some of the more experimental songs from Eat Me, Drink Me, High End of Low and Born Villain flirted with along with some elements from Holy Wood and The Resident Evil Score. Which basically mutated into the beast known as the Pale Emperor. I have nothing bad to say about this. Grab some headphones, light a candle for the sinners (or come on baby light my fire) and enjoy this album.”

I was just thinking about Marilyn Manson the other day — how everything he did used to seem so outrageous and no he looks like somebody’s fat uncle.

Yeah, last I saw of him (before this CD/review) was his interview on the Rollins Show, that was several years ago, and musically it was a much longer time ago.
Then again, he just put out a brand new album (The Pale Emporer) last week, so he’s still going!
