Forrest Gump OMPS, Grim Skunk, Indigo Girls, Megadeth, Subtle

Alright! Well, over the past 5 days I’ve given you 50 albums that are fanastic for late night listening, and I know there are a zillion others. I like making lists like that, fun times! So what else has been in my ears lately?

Megadeth – Greatest Hits: Back To The Start

Incredible playing, really really satisfying metal riffs, and packed to the tits with hits. A one-stop shop if you want Megadeth but don’t want to have to buy the whole discography. I’m still not sold on Mustaine’s vocals, but no matter. Super-cool tunes.

Subtle – For Hero: For Fool

However many times I play this CD, I still find things I hadn’t heard before. Weird, experimental, and he raps at super-high speeds. I’ll admit, at first I didn’t like it. But repeat listens make it worthwhile now. It’s full of effects, crazy bits all over the place. Fun!

Grimskunk – Fires Under The Road

An album chock full of punk metal rock riffs. This would make great barroom rock. Being from Québec, of course there’s a little politics on board, like America Sucks, or Vive le Québec libre (sung en français, no less), but never mind. Just throw it in, turn it up, and get your freakin’ rock on. This sounds great to me.

Indigo Girls – Indigo Girls

What a debut! I love Indigo Girls, as do we all, surely, and this one is fantastic. Closer To Fine! Damn, what an album opener. But this whole thing is brimming with hooks, guitar bliss and those wonderful harmonies. This is from 1989, but it sounds timeless, born of that folk tradition that always just is.

Various – Forrest Gump OST/OMPS/Soundtrack

If ever there was a movie in the 90s that was huge on story but still dominated by music, it’s this one. And this soundtrack blows the mind, excellent song selections melded indelibly with scenes and events. We saw this film in the theaters, and when it was done and we were enthusing about the songs and how they fit so well, my Dad said “there was music?” Yes, Dad, there was music. Haha.

I had one customer, she was a real bitch! All she ever asked for was Grim Skunk. Everyone on the staff hated her. That’s my biggest association with that band. She was just nasty and snarky to everyone.

The Forrest Gump soundtrack is great for all ages. You can put it on in the car and there are fun songs for everyone.

Megadeth, I agree about Mustaine. One CD of Megadeth at a time is all I need.

In my researches on it, it looked like there were two versions of that FG sndtrk. The regular at 32 songs, another at 34 songs.

One disc, yeah. I found the same when I reviewed an album of theirs. So, may as well go with the one that’s got the hits. I loved Hangar 18.

On further reflection, ya know, a collaboration between the two groups ain’t such a stretch. Indigo Girls did a wonderful remake of their song Shed Your Skin with Tom Morello. I have that on a CMJ disc here, somewhere.

Bloody hipsters. I wish they’d stop liking vinyls and drive up the prices on something else for a while. Maybe 8-tracks need to make a come back or something. Then, prices for vinyls can go back to what they were. Bloody hipsters.

You know, I met a guy here who says his sister has a record player, it hangs on the wall/on a shelf as decoration. She bought cool-looking old vinyls to go with it, but has no intention of playing them. That’s just one case – how many others are out there? Bloody hipsters, leave the vinyls alone.

I’d love to, jprobichaud, but this could be a family site…

They really are tourists, though. Maybe vintage metal toasters need to become the next big thing. Then they can put those on shelves and leave us alone.

Same thing. Tourists. It’s cool to like records, prices go up. It’ll shift to something else, hopefully soon. Hipster toasters, man, I’m telling you. It’s the next big thing. Spread the word.
