Genius/GZA – Liquid Swords: The Chess Box Edition

Genius/GZA – Liquid Swords: The Chess Box Edition

Recently, there was some talk about the mighty Wu-Tang Clan over on stephen1001’s excellent site, so I thought I’d quickly break my holiday from blogging (yet again) while it was still timely, and share a really cool (related) trinket that I have here.

The solo albums from the members of the Clan have been numerous and varied, but one of the best is Liquid Swords (1995). It’s a great listen, top to bottom.

This 2CD copy has several things going for it beyond the album proper, including: a disc of full-length instrumentals, extended artwork, liner notes from the GZA, and a complete miniature chess set in the bottom of the boxed set! The chess set is a cool touch, and the pieces even have felt on the bottoms. It is fairly tight in there, though – hard to play a game with it if you have big hands. Still, I think they really did this whole set up with thought and care, really had the fans/collectors in mind.

Da Mystery Of Chessboxin’, indeed!

Man, that’s a nice set. Great album, too. You should pick up some Ghostface Killah for sure – Supreme Clientele and FishScale are well worth your time …

I am just seeing this comment now (sorry!). I saw some Ghostface Killah in Taranna in June, but didn’t know one from the other. Now, with your recommends, I’ll know for the fall when Mike and I return!

Yes! The packaging is totally cool, especially given their love of chess.

And yes, I’ve done more on hiatus than you… I’m like the army – I do more blogging on hiatus than you do on your regular schedule! Hahaha. Man, I even posted (during the hiatus) about how I suck at not posting during the hiatus. I AM META!

Yeah it’s really great! I’d enjoy having it here even if the album was a bust, just for the cool factor. But happily, the album is also fantastic, so double win!

Yup, they really had the collectors in mind when they put this one together. It’s totally fun.

Well, if you feel the urge, Liquid Swords is a completely solid choice. Highly recommended. Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx is another, and the RZA’s soundtrack work like Afro Samurai and Ghost Dog (though I still haven’t gotten the Japanese version of it, it’s totally different than the regular version, like, all different tracks and instrumentals I WANT IT SO BAD it’s on the Grail List!).

But if you’re in the mood, I’d say get yer mitts on all the main studio records first. There aren’t many, and they’re all brilliant in their own ways.

Ha and I don’t have any from either of those! Man, there’s just so much out there.

OK now I’m curious what the chess set would be like on the LP version – I’ll bet there’s more space for your hands than there is in the CD version. Maybe even larger, full size pieces!

If you have to take a break from holiday to compliment my site, I’m OK with that, thanks!
I’m definitely intrigued by this one – nice commemorative item!

Fantastic. If you can, save your pennies and get this edition. Not only is the chess set cool, and it’s an all-around great fan-package, but the extra disc of full instrumentals offers, I think, an even deeper insight into the incredible production on this record.
