Atoms For Peace – Amok

I’d been after this album for a while, and I got the CD for Christmas! I’ve been through it three times since boxing day and I’m entranced.

Here we have a super-group of Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Mauro Refosco, Joey Waronker, and Flea. They’re named after a speech Eisenhower gave at the UN in 1953 (and the subsequent program).

9 tracks in 45 minutes, it’s equally ethereal and immediate, mature and playful, and entirely engaging (and well it should be, given the crew involved). It sounds like anything could happen at any moment, and it’s a beautiful thing.

Essential listening.

It really is! And I think it’s the same dude that did the artwork for Yorke’s other solo record (The Eraser).

1537 has a rare triple vinyl of this record that he’s been telling me about (I’ve been drooling), I can only imagine how gorgeous that art is LP-sized!

I’ve only heard bits and pieces from this. Always fairly impressed, but completely forgot it existed! Thanks for the reminder!

I was reading online about comparisons to The King Of Limbs, with which I disagree, it’s a different sound. Even The Eraser has a different feel. This one stands on its own as a good idea.

Yup it’s all an acquired taste. Radiohead, Yorke, AFP, they’re all unique. At least we get to pick and choose!

I admit being a little jealous of the vinyl. I probably should have just bought the damned thing (I saw it in Taranna but thought $30 was too high).
