The Best Fucking Collaboration Week Ever!, Pt.2: Def Leppard – Mirrorball Live & More

Hey folks! It’s The Best Fucking Collaboration Week Ever, Pt. 2! Just like last time, Mike and Aaron will be doing simultaneous daily reviews of albums. This time, they’re covering stuff these two intrepid music reporters have sent to each other. Buckle up, buttercups, it’s gonna be a blast!

When it comes to Def Leppard, you’re gonna have to go read Mike’s post. You go on ahead. I’ll wait here ’til you get back.

***

First off: My iTunes Def Leppard Collection (I own these CDs*):

On Through The Night
High ’N’ Dry
Pyromania
When Love And Hate Collide/Pour Some Sugar on Me**
Songs From the Sparkle Lounge**
Mirrorball – Live & More**

Some massive gaps there, eh! Yup.

*I may own some duplicates on cassette and/or vinyl
** Gifted to me (the AAAA) by Mike!

So.

Def Leppard and I have an ancient history. When I was a kid, my Pyromania tape was a big deal. Friends of mine had On Through The Night and High ‘N’ Dry too. I got off the bus when Hysteria came out, never bought it. I heard it enough anyways, at other peoples’ places. Decades passed, and I heard many of their songs on the radio (which isn’t often as I hate the radio). I didn’t buy any more of their records, though.

Much more recently, Mike sent me the Sparkle Lounge and that single (see list, above), which I reviewed (and liked). And then Mike sent me this 2CD/1DVD set called Mirrorball. And I’ve played the whole damn thing. And I enjoyed it!

Look, I know most of the people reading this are already fans who probably already own this. I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments, especially insightful tidbits that teach me new things about it. Do you like the track selections? Do you like the versions? It looks and sounds fine to me, but I wouldn’t know!

Even with my patchy DL history, I knew just about every song here (thanks to radio and Mike sending me Sparkle Lounge). And even the songs I didn’t know sounded like the others and it all fit together anyway because this band has a sound. It plays like a damn greatest hits set. There are a couple of covers, including Rock On (David Essex), and Action (The Sweet), both of which they make sound like DL songs anyway.

The new songs Undefeated and It’s All About Believin’ sound like more DL, but Kings Of The World has gotta be their tribute to Queen, right? Because, I mean, holy shit totally.

And there’s a 50 minute DVD here too! Lots of backstage and studio footage and live performances. It gets goofy, with sections like where everyone is trying to make didjeridoo noises (really?), but hey. They’re having fun. They meet Billy Idol and Steve Stevens and reminisce. There’s a sweet cheer for Rick Allen at Donnington. Lots of fan meet and greets. They’re at the frickin’ CMT Awards… Not sure how often I’d watch this, but it was a cool tip-in for the set, for sure.

IN SUM:

I don’t listen to Def Leppard all that often, but when I hear them I am reminded that they are a solid, class act and they have built and nurtured a sound all their own, unique in the world. I liked this set. Thanks heaps, Brother Mike!

I bought this and it has been a while, since i listened to it. I forgot to mention at Mikes that he’s correct in that the tack on live cd from Pyromania reissue (tour 83) is awesome! They were on fire ..

The more you guys talk about that Pyromania, the more it entices me. That was the big album for me, as a kid. If I were to see it cheap, I wouldn’t say no to snagging it.

WHen you said “I got off the bus” -I was picturing the cover of on through the night, that you had boarded that vehicle and hopped off – it was a nice visual!

THis is why I felt comfortable sending this to you — even though the Japanese edition doesn’t have a DVD, I didn’t feel I was missing much in the era of youtube. I made a choice and I think it was a good one.

Great review! Six down one to go.

Thanks Mike, this one was a biggie, took a while to get through everything here!

The Japanese set didn’t have the DVD? And you sent it anyway? What about completeness? Gah! I feel like I should return it!

I just looked it up and the whole thing is (for now) on the Tubes Of You. But STILL!

Fair enough. And I was a fan as a kid and haven’t really followed them since, so it’s like I walked into a room where I know everybody but it’s been so long since I’ve seen them that I just sort of stay to the edges and take things in. 🙂

Hmmm. I have this one here. Didn’t do much for me, but I haven’t listened to the whole thing, right enough. I’ll head over to Mike’s and see what he says … two good reviews and I’ll revist!

Depends on how you feel about DL. If you dig that thing they do, this would be worth having and hearing anyway! As a casual fan, I liked it well enough! If I were you, I’d trust Mike’s opinion more! 😉
