KMA1902 Regina Spektor – Soviet Kitsch

The Taranna Was Hot Series: Part 18/25

Got this CD/DVD from the 3-for-$10 bin at BMV. Spektor’s like Bjork, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple, but she’s entirely her own too. Her voice here is powerful and unique, her piano playing is stellar, her strong lyrics restless and poetic.

Soviet Kitsch is quirky and playful, almost blindingly creative and inventive. You never know what’s coming next, so you’re held riveted the entire time. Recommended to all.

DVD includes a cool 16 minute short film, and a song video.

  1. I love what she did with the Orange is the New Black opening song!

  2. Never heard of her, but I got it all linked up for ya!

  3. That’s a pretty impressive trio to be among – and original sound too, bonus!

  4. I have the first ‘album’ of hers – Mary Ann Meets The Grave Diggers. It was fairly decent, but I was never really sold on it and never explored further.

    • I’ve never even seen that one before! Hm, you may like her collaborations with Billy Childish… if you can find them, that is! I have a hard time finding anything with that guy’s name on it, around these parts.
