Robert Cray – Strong Persuader

The Beam Me Up Scotty’s Series, Part 5/25 (LP)

Classic blues soul record. Smokin’ guitar parts, and tons of horns! What’s not to like?

This major label debut may not be as down and dirty as some other players’ albums, it may sound a bit suburbs versus others’ ghettos, but it’s still classy southern soul with a tight, clean sound that melodically pulls you in and holds you close.

Did I mention the horns? I always cheer for the horns. It’s a classy record, and they make it classier!

Of course you can dissent! You’re entitled to be wrong! 😉 Hahaha it’s cool, I get it. It’s more soul than blues, more clean fun than down and dirty. If you didn’t know that going in, I could see how it’d be a bit of a let-down.

I’d often seen this one cheap, but predictably enough I’ve never spotted it since Rich convinced me to remedy my thinking on Cray.

I should also add that I love the cover. It’s simplicity and Cray’s smile make it too wonderful to ignore (even if I had misgivings about the content).

Isn’t that the way things go, you see it everywhere and then when you want one, you can’t get a copy! Crazy. Ah well, I’m sure one will turn up shortly.

The cover is fun probably took them 5 minutes to do – set it up, make him laugh, boom.

I first got interested in Cray and a lot of other blues guys from my guitar magazine reading! So yeah, I’m on board with Cray. I don’t have this but I’ve heard this album.

Wow, thanks Rich! That’s two in short order! I’m glad you’re digging the 80 word thing, and even more glad I had something to say that earned the word ‘spectacular!’ 🙂 This really is a great LP, a total steal at $2.

I’ll happily link to your fine blog anytime. Hey all you folks, follow that link up there and get yerself to Rich’s site!
