Red Hot Chili Peppers – Californication

Five singles, all of them huge. Plenty more that shoulda-been. John Frusciante returns, replacing Dave Navarro, and the sound shifted. Melodic and contemplative, their irrepressible energy remains (sounds like Chilis!). This one sees them making strides towards finding a bit more balance.

I’m known in these parts as a Chilis fan, and I won’t sell this to some of our Readers, but that’s OK. Chaçun â son goût! More for me!

Californication rules, top to bottom.

Last Chili Peppers album I bought. Saw them around this time, too… but I’m with Mike, everything after this took its formula. Diminishing returns. I don’t listen to this often, as it’s about 6 or 7 songs too long. And, well, just not very good outside the few standouts.

Na. I have Mother’s Milk, Blood Sugar…, One Hot Minute (my favourite), and Californication here. Probably more than I currently need, actually!

This is the last one I really liked…By Your Side wasn’t bad either. However I consider this album to be the beginning of a serious formulaic approach for RHCP, and I can’t help but hear Californication every time they release a new album.

It was also the first one that I noticed was mastered REALLY loud. When it came on, we had to turn the stereo DOWN. Because it was so much louder than everything else.

Up to my ass in alligators, let’s get it on with tha alligator hater!
