Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Live Rust

Tied closely to Rust Never Sleeps, this late-1978 live show is brilliant. Starting with a bunch of acoustic tunes, it’s not long before the band kicks in and rocks us the hell out like only Crazy Horse can.

Following After The Goldrush’s piano beauty, he says “When I get big, I’m gonna get an electric guitar…”

Later, they even shout against the rain…

The word ‘classic’ gets tossed around too easily, but this is one. Damn.

Look at this unreal setlist:
Sugar Mountain
I Am A Child
Comes A Time
After The Gold Rush
My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)
When You Dance I Can Really Love
The Loner
The Needle And The Damage Done
Lotta Love
Sedan Delivery
Powderfinger
Cortez The Killer
Cinnamon Girl
Like A Hurricane
Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)
Tonight’s The Night

Customer came in. “Do you have Rust?”

Uhhh…what? Live Rust? Rust Never Sleeps? The band Rusty? He didn’t know.

So I gave him Rusty to listen to. “This is Rust? It doesn’t sound like Neil Young.” Well why the hell didn’t you clarify!?

As Neil ages, he seems to be farting albums. I haven’t looked into it, I wonder if he has his own set-up now and can do more on his own without label interference… either that or he just has a lot to say and folks say ‘hey, it’s Neil Young, release it!’ and away he goes.

I think Reprise just give him free reign. Guess he’s a bit of a big deal to have on their roster, so likely just release whatever he wants.

Unfortunately, even though it is still long, the solo on “Cortez the Killer” has been edited. Otherwise, great album. I’m not a Young fan (neither am I a young fan), but I really like this album (except “Sedan Delivery”).

Since they have covered other bands (usually (always?) on B-sides, I would really like to hear Iron Maiden do, say, “Cinnamon Girl”. 🙂

They edited that solo? Holy mackerel, Neil! Haha that’s crazy.

If you’re not a Neil fan, what is it about this one that you like? Because I’d say this is pretty representative of his sound…

Oh man, I’d love it if Maiden did a covers album. Imagine!
