Leon Bridges – Coming Home

This album captures the best of what makes great soul music. Bridges’ vocals are pure 60s soul, the music is straight out of that same glorious period, complete with backing vocals, even recorded with that vintage sound (imagine the vinyl!).

It’s a time machine, zapping us back to a time when this musical style was new. But even then, this isn’t slavish homage, an approximation, or an updating of the sound. This is pure, straight-on, beautiful soul.

  1. Fine last paragraph Aaron – you don’t want it to ‘remind’ you of soul, or just bring it up to date – sounds like this one is the real deal, as it should be!

    • Thanks Geoff! That’s what I was trying to get across – this isn’t some modern r&b approximation of what your Mom’s old Sam Cooke records sound like, this is the real deal, and released in 2015! An anachronism then, really, because so much that claims to manage this type of thing just hasn’t got IT. This one has IT, and in spades. If you like soul, you’ll need this one.

  2. I was really impressed with Charles Bradley’s soul, right out of an era long gone! If this is anything like that — sold.

  3. It’s all about the soul… I haven’t heard of this chap, but sounds like he should be filed alongside Charles Bradley and yon Gregory Porter? I shall check him out.

  4. I’ve got the Vinyl. I’m worried that I’m going to wear the needle out. Bridges is the second coming of Sam Cooke and the TRUTH.

    • Ohhhh I really wanna get the vinyl, I just know it’d be sweet! I love this record more and more!

I recently got the Louisiana Sun EP on 10″, it was a RSD release. It’s got the tracks that didn’t make the Coming Home record on it. Go get you some!

      Thanks for reading!

  5. I see a lot of Charles Bradley chat here – check out Sonny Knight & The Lakers / all of the Secret Stash stuff if you like Charles!
