Way back around the new year, I said something about finishing up some admin crap on the site, some behind the scenes stuff that needed doing. The unsexy stuff. But it bugged me that it wasn’t done, so I’ve been chipping away at a couple of projects for the past while.

And recently, I got one done! You’re gonna care!*

If you don’t have categories on your site, WP automatically marks every post as “Uncategorized.” I won’t go into why I feel that’s not better than just not having a category on a post at all (it’s tyranny, that’s what it is!). Ahem, anyway. Here on the KMA, we have two categories: Posts By James, and Posts By Aaron. Simple.

But for some reason, there was a period of about 400 posts or so where neither of us was using our namesake categories, so we ended up with all of those posts marked as Uncategorized. That bugged me, more than it would a normal person (I never said I was normal!). So, I sat here and went through all of those posts using Quick Edit in the admin section, and I unclicked each Uncategorized radio button and applied the correct KMA category to each post that needed it.

It was boring. It sucked. But now it’s done and, going forward, it’ll be easy to maintain.

For any of you dear Faithful Readers who want to read only the work of one or the other of us (read James’!), I’ve added a Categories widget to the sidebar on the right side of the main page. The dropdown menu there lets you select either of us.

Anyway, that was a lot of reading about something for which you likely couldn’t care less. But the KMA is committed to bringing you the best experience, and this unsexy stuff is just part of the full meal deal.

* sarcasm is just one of the fine features we offer here at the KMA!

  1. I vote James has to do all the boring administration stuff and give you a break!

    • Hahaha noooo nope nope nope. James gestates awesome posts in a specially-designed cocoon of creativity. Every once in a special while, he drops his awesomeness posts on us all! We all benefit from this awesomeness, so just leave all the grunt work to me, the monkey with the typewriter!

      • But he didn’t put categories on his stuff either! I think he shares equal responsibility.

        • Haha nope. James is also an internet wizard and when there are major WTF moments, he handles those. He’s also handled our site migrations when we jumped from one site to another a couple of times. The big gun stuff.

Some of this little stuff I take on for myself because I don’t mind. I just put tunes in the good headphones and chip away. It’s meditative! I’m working on another one RIGHT NOW.

        • Besides, it was only about 400 posts. If it had been all 2000+, then yeah, maybe so!

  2. Someone had to touch that topic. I never knew how much other people were bothered by the Auto – Uncategorized. My first site, I didn’t label them either, this time around I didn’t want to fall behind and have 400 pilled up, haha.

    • It’s tyranny! It’s the equivalent of Homer Simpson coming on a square on a form he was filling out where it says DO NOT WRITE IN THIS SPACE and so he writes OK in that space. There does not need to be anything there – who says a post HAS TO have a category applied? But WP seems to think there must be one, so it Uncategorizes them. Which forces you to make categories of your own, just to make their Uncategorized bullsh*t go away! Tyranny.

Man, I have a long list of rants about WP and how they keep changing things. Have you noticed the Underline feature is now gone from your toolbar at the top of a New Post editing page? Exactly.

Or how about how we can’t organize our media files into folders in the free site? Seriously, how long would it take for them to add a few lines of code to allow that to happen? Plug-ins for paid sites already exist, so bing bang boom. But what a useful thing, right? Apparently not for free users.

But WP is still a damn sight better than a couple of the other sites where the KMA used to reside. For now, it’s the necessary evil.

And yup, I went through about 400 posts to correct the Uncategorized category out of existence on our site. Now it’s all just our two categories. Feels better to have it all straightened out!

      • Yea, I was looking for Underline. I also feel like HTML works when it wants to in Posts. Many ranting blogs could stem from this article.

        • For Underline, you’ll have to keyboard shortcut to get it. I’m on a Mac, it’s Command-U. I think PC is CTRL-U?

I don’t know too much about HTML, but I’ve heard others say it’s a wee bit sideways sometimes in WP. I know if I single-space a list in my Text Edit (same as PC Notepad) and then copy/paste it to WP’s New Post editor, it displays as double-spaced. That makes for a lot of extra work correcting all those lines.

Awesome that Aaron runs the Janitorial duties at the site…
    Some one has too…

    • Just call me Groundskeeper Aaron! haha yeah Deke, run a blog over ten years and there’s bound to be some dust in the corners and stuff not stored properly. Just tidying up to make the KMA as cool as possible for all you cats!
