Shed Your Skin

Yesterday I found myself with a song stuck in my head, just the melody, but I couldn’t immediately place what it was…

Then I sussed out that it was Shed Your Skin by the Indigo Girls, from their (excellent) Shaming Of The Sun album.

But not just the album version… it was the Tom Morello remix I’d heard on an old CMJ New Music magazine CD (1998-07).

Fun!

One hundred and fifteen
You are seventeen
Itchy trigger
Venomous
You growing longer
You growing stronger
So shed your skin, baby
Now shed this

Come on over now
Come on over baby
You tell me it’s holy holy
I don’t know what that is, come on over now
Let’s call it the fullness of time
I don’t know what that is, come on over now

Hey holy, console me
Some power, controls me
Remorse it, I force
It can’t free it, so be it

I’m speaking in tongues
Handling you
I got religion now look at it
The days grow longer
As we grow stronger
So shed your skin baby let it rip

Come on over now
Come on over baby
You tell me it’s holy holy
I don’t know what that is, come on over now
Let’s call it the fullness of time
I don’t know what that is, come on over now

Hey holy, console me
Some power, controls me
Remorse it, I force
Don’t free it, just be it
Just be it, just be it

I’ve been lookin’ to find you
But it’s a little too late too soon
And I looking out and far
Spirits are your doom
In you
In you

I got the hangman
I got Milagro
I got the celebration too
The flesh is strong
My spirit’s stronger
So shed your skin
Baby let it through

Come on over now
Come on over baby
You tell me it’s holy holy
I don’t know what that is, come on over now
You wanna call it the fullness of time
I don’t know what that is, come on over now

Hey holy, console me
Some power, controls me
Remorse it, I force
It can’t free it, so be it

Hey holy, console me
Some power, controls me
Come on over baby

It’s nice to have those mysteries resolved – I’ll often have a line stuck in my head that I can’t remember the source. The trouble is, I often get the lyrics wrong, so a google search doesn’t always solve the mystery!

Though I have fond memories of (when you knew the song in question at least!) debating what the words were.
For example, Sunglasses at Night, there were many interpretations to the possible words in the chorus, not sure if any were accurate, but they were fun!

My buddy Brian (whom I honestly think we’ve known forever, and who is responsible for putting my lovely wife and I together though he’ll never take credit for it) ALWAYS sang the wrong words to songs. He just sang what he heard, and when he didn’t know he made it up. Often times, what Brian was singing was WAY better than the actual lyrics!

I always wonder if other people get songs stuck in their heads as vividly as I do, and most people I ask say they don’t. I think you have me beat though. I can’t tell whether the annoying tunes in my head are album tracks or remixes.

I don’t know this song, but I’ve been hearing Morello’s latest Prophets of Rage single a lot lately. Really epic stuff…been really enjoying that one tune. Sounds almost Zeppelin in its epic-ness.

I will always (always always) recommend the Indigo Girls for listening and enjoying (they’re awesome). This Morello remix reimagines the song in a cool way, perfect for 97/98 when they did this! Give the track a spin!
