Welcome back to the Various Artists/Various Blogs Festival! The festival runs December 1st-10th, across many blogs in the Community… Check out THIS PAGE at Bruce’s site for all the posts as we go along! And most importantly: our huge thanks to Bruce for getting the ball rolling on this, and for all his hard work in making it all happen!

Do I even need to say anything about this? I hope not, for a couple of reasons. First, I hope the names and songs you see in the track listing (below) are enough to make you say ‘holy shit, that’s an amazing mix!’ Because it really, really is. Second, writing about jazz is hard, for me anyway. I don’t have words when I listen to this stuff. It’s all visceral, elemental. It just goes into my blood and I know… but I couldn’t tell you how or why or all the reasons for its brilliance. It just is.
So. Seven tracks of be bop. This disc was amazing. Trust me!

Oh baby!
Great choice for a comp. These Jazz labels put out these kinds of albums. Great way to get tastes of “Various Artists”. The one I’ve been listening to lately is an ‘Impulse’ one. Fantastic!. Every time I see a take like this it starts a craving and I go on a binge.

I love these comps too, such a great thing to throw on and let ’em spin from top to bottom. An Impulse label comp would be brilliant, too, great choice! Enjoy your jazz binge! 🙂

Bop reminded me of his catchphrase recently, so when I read “Oh, Baby!” – I heard the voice of Bob Cole, and that made the post even better!

See, I like the sound of this, but I find the whole Bop jazz thing a tad difficult to get into. I know there are different bops, but I do find them equally inaccessible. That said, I’ve definitely been getting right into the hard bop of Coltrane’s Blue Train.

It’s definitely more work to listen to this stuff than it is others, but I think the rewards can sometimes also be greater, once it clicks. If it doesn’t click, then no harm and no foul!
Blue Train is AMAZING. Oh man.

It is. Not my favourite Coltrane (that’d be Love Supreme), but it’s such a great record.

See, I like Love Supreme, and I know what he was trying to do with it, but I find I don’t play it as often… ah well, it’s still amazing too. That guy was of another planet. Had to be!

One of the amazing things about a catalogue as rich as his, eh? Different albums resonate with different people. Love Supreme just blows my mind. It lifts me.

I know Love Supreme is awesome, I just don’t get lifted in the same way. My soul must need different Coltrane, is all!
