Alrighty, we’re back to the On Spec series! Let’s give ‘er!
On Spec 8: Green Day – Shenanigans
Yes, I say I bought this on spec because I go in and out of like and love with Green Day, so it wasn’t a shoe-in I was gonna dig this. Not to sound punker-than-thou (because who cares), this is just truth, but I generally like the earlier records better. Kerplunk!, 39/Smooth, Dookie, and Insomniac are essentials. After that, it’s tracks here and there, as somewhere in all of this (for me, anyway) they began calculating their sound instead of just being snotty assholes about it. Ach what am I saying, most of it is strong, anyway, so I’m just talking out of my ass.
So what do we have here? A collection of b-sides, covers, rarities and one unreleased track. Interesting. It could go either way – it could be awesome, or it could feel like a contractual obligation release of mediocre stuff that is a placeholder between studio albums. And the verdict? Find out in the In Sum, below!
Here’s a look at the tracks and whence they came:
Suffocate – Australian editions of Nimrod, 1997
Desensitized – Good Riddance, 1997, and Japanese & Australian editions of Nimrod
You Lied – Good Riddance and Australian editions of Nimrod
Outsider (written by Dee Dee Ramone; originally performed by the Ramones) – Warning, 2000
Don’t Wanna Fall in Love – Previously unreleased song from Dookie but later re-recorded as a b-side for Geek Stink Breath, 1995
Espionage (instrumental) – Hitchin’ a Ride, 1997 and the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack
I Want to Be on T.V. (written by Sam McBride, Tom Flynn; originally performed by Fang) – Geek Stink Breath, 1995, and Japanese editions of Insomniac, 1995
Scumbag (lyrics written by Mike Dirnt) – Warning, 2002 and the American Pie 2 soundtrack
Tired of Waiting for You (written by Ray Davies; originally performed by The Kinks) – Basket Case, 1994 and the Private Parts soundtrack, 1997
Sick of Me – Hitchin’ a Ride
Rotting – Good Riddance
Do Da Da – Brain Stew/Jaded, 1996, and Australian editions of Nimrod
On the Wagon – Basket Case, 1994
Ha Ha You’re Dead (lyrics written by Mike Dirnt) – previously unreleased
There was supposed to be one other Tré Cool-written track, D.U.I. (Driving Under The Influence) on here, but it got taken off for no given reason. It’s even painted over in the booklet. Thanks guys. I mean, how hard would it have been to include it? This disc has 14 tracks, sure, but for a total length of 33:23. You had a shit-ton of space! Alas.
Also, what about J.A.R. (Jason Andrew Relva)? That appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Angus, but who the fuck bought THAT? OK, I did at one point, but still. You should have included that track here too, boys!
In Sum:
Awesome! I honestly had so much fun listening to this. It’s because it has been so long since I played these guys, probably. This was just good clean Green Day fun. Yeah it sounds like them, you know what I mean. And that’s the point – crank it and have silly fun!
I get a bit bored with them after Insomniac and so this would be right up my street.

Yup! This goes past Insomniac too, but it has a bunch of songs not on the albums so it’s all good.

I like these guys when I hear them but I can’t remember the last time that I sat down to listen to any of their albums.

Fair enough, yeah, it’s always fun when they come on in the mix!

I picked up Warning this weekend at a thrift shop for $1. I have no idea if it is any good but it was $1.

Hard to go wrong for $1! Warning has some solid tunes on it, I’ll wager you’ll like it well enough!

My brother may have this one, as he stuck with Green Day for a bit. My listening goes no further than Insomniac. That’s their best, I reckon.

That was a great one for sure, but I think you’re missing out on some great tunes if you go no further, even if you don’t rate the full albums. Maybe your brother can make you a mix!

Maybe he could, but I’d hit him with it! “Haw, no Green Day beyond Insomniac! You know the rules!” 😉

No, no. See, the whole point is to give you new songs from after Insomniac to try out… 🙂

Ah! I get you!
… but I’d still hit him with it 😃

Of course you would. Brothers! Hahaha

I too bought the Angus soundtrack. Loved J.A.R. Shenanigans is the only Green Day record I don’t have. Might check it out

I had a quick look and I don’t think I have Angus here anymore, but I know at some point I did have it.
Shenanigans is worth it to fill in the gaps, for sure, especially if you didn’t buy all the singles etc.

There’s a fair few on there I don’t know. I will get around to it, but I always like the idea of there being more by the bands you like out there so one day you can still hear more by them.

Yeah it’s great to know there’s new-to-you tunes out there, but equally satisfying to find it, get it home, and finally get to hear it too! 🙂

Now i’m no Punk guy but i do come from the VH Camp where the first 6 VH albums all clocked in under 35 minutes per album….the debut being the longest of the bunch…haha

Ha man that’s so true. I remember I did all the DLR albums in one afternoon…

This sounds 1 billion times better than any of the shit that I heard from their newset release, Revolution Radio.
The only revolution would have been from anyone that paid money for that tripe. It sounded so far from their punk beginnings it made me sick.

I haven’t got that one, or much of the later stuff, to be honest. It doesn’t surprise me to hear you say that, though. As I was saying in the post, at some point along the way they got too far up their own asses and started believing the hype and the brash energy of the early stuff became calculated marketed radio ready stuff. Some people say that happened with Dookie, but I’m more forgiving and would say it was after the album after that. 🙂

For what it’s worth. I kinda liked it

That’s worth a bunch Steve! I bought the albums new release right through to… I wanna say the last one was American Idiot. I have 21stCB here too, and one of the UnoDosTre set… It’s fine but I do find I go backwards more often than forwards. Maybe I just drifted a bit.

At 33:23, this is a really long punk record. The best are only 20 minutes.

If we follow that curve, maybe the best punk records are the ones that were never recorded but were just moments of great attitude?

That’s somewhat insane, yet has a certain logic to it.

Haha well, you are reading Aaron of the KMA. That’s my wheelhouse!

Nice point about the b-sides going one of two ways – I’m glad this collection went the optimal way!

It did, I think! Pretty hard for these guys to screw up when it all kinda sounds the same anyway, though! 🙂

Nice one. I like the older Green Day better for sure and this would be a nice companion piece that I might need to grab if I see it out.

It’s a fun one for sure! I can’t help thinking it’s another one of those cases where they could have added more but didn’t, either because they didn’t care, they felt tunes didn’t fit the sound as it played, or because they’re cynical enough to hold more stuff back for yet another future release of rarities. I dunno. If it were me, I’d just put it all in one place and let people have done with it!
This one does fill in some holes, though, and that’s cool.

Agreed. Just put it all out there. I am sure they are holding back for other releases.

That’s tiresome to me! I mean, they make two and a half minute pop punk songs. Put it all together, release it, and move on! Ah well.

I can’t believe that was the case it’s probably more to do with publishing or how the record flows. Remember this is the band who threw a whole album away not long after this and gave away a couple of discs worth of stuff under Foxboro Hot Tubs name.

This is true. There was also The Network… was that ever confirmed as them?
