This ain’t part of my Taranna scores, I just wanted to rave… I got this at work for cheap, and it’s the best damn CD I’ve played in a while. The music is just so beautiful, and uplifting… even though Wiki says “On this album Gabriel explored the pain of recent personal problems; his failed first marriage, his relationship with actress Rosanna Arquette, and the growing distance between him and his first daughter.” Well alright, but the music is so good, so many world music influences and sounds, all these epic swells… And there can be beauty in tough lyrics, too, if it leads to healing (which I think this stuff ultimately does). And I mean, how do you argue with Come Talk To Me, and right off the top of the album? You don’t! What a track!
Other singles were Digging In The Dirt, Steam, Blood Of Eden (f. Sinéad O’Connor), Kiss That Frog, and Secret World (promo single, as was Come Talk To Me). And: Just look at the personnel on here! I mean… Tony Levin, Daniel Lanois, John Paul Jones, Brian Eno, sooo many more! Wild.
Brilliant.
Hit It Or Quit It? Hit!
I remember bugging the shit out of my local record store when Gabriel was releasing his first solo album. I did the same thing for his next few also. He’s good and this album continues it. You said it “Well alright, but the music is so good”

Quintessence then Zulu records, Vancouver. Great place. Great staff. Man did I spend a lot of time in there. Maybe I’ll bug you one day.

If you mean come here to try our shoppe, save the gas money. Better met in Taranna than in our one dingy shoppe and our one corporate shoppe run by (it turns out) nits.

Those are my kind of shops. There used to be some real funky ones in Van. along with all the usual big stores. On the books thing. I’m heading to Victoria in a couple weeks. Two of my favorite stops are ‘Monroe’s Books’ (you would dig this place) and Old Morris Tobacconist. Vic is old bookstore city.

Vics good for all those things. The local news had a clip of Josh Brolin and his wife sitting in an aisle of one of the local used book stores checking out some reading. Cool guy.

Fun. Shame they had folks following them taking pictures of everything they do, though. Like, let them browse books in peace, eh!

It was pretty low key not paparazzi. Him and his wife were very cool. It must of been prearranged because it was like a travelogue. He’s pretty unassuming and blends in. He’s one of us Books. He loves his books and Victoria is a readers paradise.

Ah OK, sounds like it was planned. If he loves his books, I like him. I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t read. If I ever go to someone’s house and there aren’t bookshelves somewhere, I wonder and plan my exits (just in case). I need to get to Victoria. And hell, all of BC! Someday!

Sarca just introduced me to this album not to long ago. Always a fan of the greatest hits, but never really got into one of his albums until this one!

The hits are great when played all together (You have Shaking The Tree, right?), but the albums are a whole other world. Next, you gotta get the record called So. Just… wow.

Damn right, it’s a good album!

I have a fair bit of Gabriel stuff to catch up on. Including this one… pleasing to read that it gets a glowing “wahoo!!”.

Yessir I’d recommend this one for sure. Solid album, top to bottom. It sets the tone, pulls you in, and holds you there the whole time. Awesome!

I like that he always put effort into the videos too – Digging in the Dirt & Steam had terrific audio & visual!

Good shout, Geoff, the videos are awesome too, indeed!

I love this one too – probably my second favourite Gabriel album after III, and it doesn’t always get the recognition. Secret World is a great track.

Full agreement from here, and now my eyes are peeled for III!

Not just one of my favourite Peter Gabriel albums, but one of my enduring favourites period. So good I haven’t found a way to write about it.

Wow, and I can totally see why! Sooooo good. I understand the struggle to write about it when it means so much. I remember Rich saying he’d have trouble writing up Zeppelin… anyway, maybe I got away with it because it’s just a blurb that (basically) says “wahoo I loved this!,” it was still fresh after just a few listens and not much invested in it… YET. I get the feeling this one will stay in the rotation!!

Could well be, Aaron. It’s an album with many layers.
And btw, I love a good punchy ‘Wahoo!’

Layers, yes! WAHOO!! (he gleefully yelled, punchily 🙂 )

I had no idea Eno contributed on this record. Very cool. I was always floored by the tasteful and exciting drumming by Manu Katche.

This is a great record, dude. I played it (again) really loud in my car today and it sounds fantastic. For Gabriel, I would also recommend So. “So” (see what I did there?) many great tunes there too, and Red Rain is a personal fave…

Red Rain is awesome! Too bad when Queensryche covered it, they blew it…but that is their fault!

I didn’t know they covered it, but now I don’t need to hear it. Thanks!
