KMA2666 Leonard Cohen – Closing Time

Toasty Taranna #21: Sonic Boom #5: Leonard Cohen – Closing Time (single)

Mike found this one, handed it to me saying something like ‘meh, it’s only one song so it’s probably not interesting…’ as I put it straight into my shopping basket. Do I need it? Of course not. This is an album track I already own, and this single is just a label promo of the one song. But it’s Leonard! Of course I’m buying it!

I love this song. I’ve heard folks say Leonard’s is depressing music for slitting your wrists, but I think this song is brilliantly hilarious, and the video is too.

  1. …And… this song is about the legendary Matador… and the video was filmed there!!!! Two bonus reasons to love this tune!

  2. It’s a great song and features some of my favorite lyrics of his, but I don’t think I’d have bought this. Give me a cool B side!

    • I’ve done this other times recently, apparently I have no filter on bands I like. Leonard, Tragically Hip, Sloan – I see even a one-song album track single and I buy it. Silly me, I guess, but I do it anyway!

The 7″ of this had Everybody Knows on the flip side, and there’s another version of this CD single that has Everybody Knows and Hallelujah on it. All album tracks, so I guess there wasn’t a b-side worth releasing on this one (according to somebody, anyway).

  3. At the time, I didn’t care for the song at all (I was 11! Where were the guitars?!) – but now I’m a fan!

  4. I think he’s funny too.
