Been ages since I spun this album, and I assumed it was gonna be too 1990s for 2019. Nope. Look past Mr. Jones and Round Here, there’s gold in these hills. Of course I still knew every word, every note. Shame it took me so long to come back here, as this was like meeting up with a long-lost friend.
One of my college roommates would play this full blast every early morning after coming home from the bar. I know I’m in the minority but I just can’t get behind this one.

No I get it, having it blasted at you that much would make anyone wary of it. I hope someday you’ll be able to come back to it. There’s gold in them thar hills.

One of the few 90’s bands that I really enjoyed. This is a classic album and always one of my favorites from that era.

Definitely classic, full agreement from here. I saw online there’s a vinyl reissue of it… imagine…

I would buy that.

It’s $40 CAD on the Canuck Amazon, 2LP set. 88% gave it 5 stars. In fact, this review kinda makes me wanna pull the thrigger right now…
“Nothing but praise here, especially at Amazon’s discounted price of $43 for the Analogue Productions 45rpm double album. Flat and quiet pressing with beautifully reproduced cover and interior art. And the sound? Compared to the CD of this played over my Linn Karik transport into a Theta Casablance Extreme DAC it wasn’t a fair fight. The vinyl played back via my Linn LP12 threw an enormous soundstage, quiet and full of ambience and air. The unforced detail in the vocals and strings was also very impressive as was the slam in the bass. I find it hit and miss these days whether vinyl will beat CD, but in this case it’s not even close. Grab this one before it becomes a collectors’ item.”

No way, man! I’ve listened to this twice in as many days! Round Here is exceptional… that’s been one of my favourite songs since I heard this album (musta been 96, cause I think Recovering the Satellites has just been released), but there’s so much gold here – Perfect Blue Buildings… Sullivan Street… Omaha… and even though Mr Jones and Rain King maybe don’t do much for me these days, they’re still strong songs. As a whole piece of work, it’s really quite brilliant.

Yes way, man! Great minds truly do think alike. And you nailed it, it’s a complete piece of art, top to bottom. One of the best albums of the 90s and not only because it was a welcome respite from all the clatter of grunge and rap-rock.

Yeah, it was a very laid back album… quite a difference from what I was listening to at the time. I’m gonna hit up some of the albums I didn’t bother with (Hard Candy onwards).

Let me know how you get on. I didn’t buy anything past the live on a wire album, whatever that was called.

I think it was Across a Wire? I think that came before This Desert Life… that was the last one I bought and really listened to (not great).

Yeah that was it, across a wire! There were two CDs in it, and on one the dude introducing them calls them his favourite band ever, if I remember correctly. Anyway, that was the last I heard (I think) unless there were songs on the radio (which I rarely listen to).
