Yes, I am totally on a nostalgia kick, these days. Awesome!
Truth: Offspring never hit this height, ever again, after this. Yes, they have had awesome and engaging songs since this. Even hit singles. But never entire albums… They might again, though, so keep listening. Hey Dexter, you guys proved you can do it, so… do it again! No pressure.
From Time To Relax’s hilarity (which totally makes me think they were channeling Platinum Blonde’s intro of “Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin…”) through to Smash, this is a perfect record, and I don’t care what you think of that statement. I’m talking about conception and execution. It’s fast, aggressive and excellently recorded. Every song is angry without being strident. It’s intelligent without being snobby. It’s of our time without being preachy. It’s punk without being slavish to the rules some people have decided about punk. It’s socially aware and makes you want to pay attention. And it’s bouncy while it’s totally friggin’ catchy, from start to finish. Everything is here.
The internet is smart. Look up the lyrics and read along – this is a brilliant effort, on that front, alone. “I’m not trendy asshole… I am alive!”
Man, I’ve lived this record since university, and while I may yet still prefer Ignition (the debate it still, after all these years, out on that one – hell, just own them both, I say), this is a must have. Bad Habit is the ultimate road rage song. The hit singles Come Out And Play and Self-Esteem (conveniently packaged back to back) are huge… well, you know what they are, and you can’t get them out of your head after only reading the song titles. Right? See? We all know someone who needs to hear What Happened To You? Not The One is an anthem for my generation. Something To Believe In is the same… There isn’t a song, here, that’s out of place. Simply put, it’s a hit factory. Every one of these songs could have been/should have been/was huge. Not a dead-weight track here, and all of it had the energy to rock unapologetically.
Did they sell out? Argue all you want. I’m too busy having a fucking blast, listening to this while I jump around the living room. Even after all these years. Perfect.
