I snagged this CD for $2 at our local thrift shop. A pristine copy, too. I could not believe my luck – I am thrilled to find anything on the venerable SST Records, even at full price!
I write the following words having not heard much (if any) music from this band. I’m sure better writers than me wrote what you need to know about these guys, and decades ago. I encourage you to seek those writers out too, at the same time as you buy up all of this band’s records.
A compilation of tracks from all their SST releases, every song on Heavier Than Thou is a sludgy, crashing noisefest and I love them all completely, even after only one trip through the CD. There’s a (sometimes overwhelming) influence of Sabbath here, and it’s all loud as hell. The solos are all sharp edges and they absolutely soar. The battery is tight and heavy as hell. This must have been absolutely crushing, in a live setting. And the vocals fit the project perfectly, whether it’s Scott ‘Wino’ Weinrich or Scott Reagers. They are different, but they both work just fine.
As if you needed further prodding, they even cover Black Flag’s Thirsty And Miserable, first as a half-speed stomp, then at double time with an absolutely ripping guitar solo. Oh baby.
Should you seek this out? HELL YES. I found mine so cheap as to be worthy of an apology to the band. But even if you have to pay full price for it, do it. It’s so worth it. Thanks to this, now I wanna go get the albums proper and build a Saint Vitus collection. I’m on it.
