This record followed me home from our last trip to the cool record shops in Toronto for one reason only – a bright orange (get it?) sticker on the cover trumpeting the fact that this album features members of Guided By Voices and Beulah. Those of you who are regulars to this site will know well of my deep and abiding love of all things related to GBV, so it’s stands to reason I would buy this. As it turns out, only Doug Gillard was involved in this recording, but that’s still fine by me. Gillard’s a stellar guitar player.
This record treads that middle ground between pop and rock. None of the songs really stand out; instead they all sort of blend together in a wash and you come away with a general sense of the record rather than individual songs. But they’re not bad, in any way. In fact, if any of these had had more exposure, they might have been popular on college radio for a while.
I can’t imagine playing this very often, but the collector in me could not pass by what is probably a fairly hard-to-find disc related (even peripherally) to our GBV heroes.
