Andrés Segovia – Segovia Plays Bach

When I was digging in the bins at She Said Boom! in Toronto a couple of weeks ago, I learned that they have boxes underneath the LP bins. Those boxes are where they put the LPs they’re selling for $1.00. Yep, that’s right. I got Segovia for $1. Fuuuu…

Andrés Segovia – Segovia Plays Bach (SAGA 5248, UK release, 1973)

Right off the bat, I’ll tell you, this man was a master of the guitar. He died in 1987 at the age of 94. Anything you can get of his, in any format, is so very worth it. He was a trailblazer, and a map-maker for players in his footsteps. Please also note: I am woefully under-equipped to write intelligently about any of this, so please bear with me.

This Bach work is stunningly beautiful. As I sat there, the intricate notes flitting past me, I was lifted. And that, of course, is exactly the point of Bach’s music. The listening was also a bit harrowing, as Bach never shied away from all the emotions, and so parts are far more forceful, though only when needed. Segovia brings passion and control to each piece with aplomb.

But the cumulative effect of spinning this LP, with all of its warm pops and hisses, was my awareness of just how achingly lovely these renditions are. Playing this, I was in the presence of both masters: Bach, and Segovia. I’m gonna float on this for days.
