Walking side streets in Toronto in June, I came across a box at the end of someone’s sidewalk that had a bunch of free stuff in it. I found cassettes! This was one of them…
Shadowfax – Shadowdance
I grabbed this without knowing who the band is because, let’s face it, who wouldn’t want an album by a band who named themselves after Gandalf’s horse in Lord Of The Rings?*
Wiki says they started in 1972 (disbanded in 1995) and made a few records. It says they were new age/electronic. They even won a Grammy for an album they did in 1989. I had no idea.
This cassette is their 1983 third album, and… well, it ain’t my cup of tea. It is indeed new age-y, and electronic. They’ve added east Indian elements to the music, so maybe ‘fusion’ applies here too. I’d call it new age jazz, myself (does that label exist?). It’s quite experiemental, a little noodly, and somewhat close to phone line on-hold muzak. Overall, it definitely sounds of its era. Oh so very 80s.
I won’t likely play it again. But it was free, and you can’t beat that price!
* At least, that was my guess as I stood there on the pavement, but I turned out to be correct!
