The Five Pennies OMPS

Welcome to my Gratitude Series, wherein I go through the loveliness I have received for my birthday this year!

I should also note, I have one more gift from James yet to go, after this, but I didn’t realize (going in) just how much goodness was there, and it’s going to take me quite a while to review it all. I’ll get there when I do!

But still! Here we have goodness from James. Check it out!

The Five Pennies OMPS (LP)

You’ll recall that I found the Five Pennies DVD (a Grail List item for our friend Susan) at Sonic Boom in Toronto, back in June. Susan was thrilled to receive it.* And then, a while later, James was in his local thrift shop and found a bunch of vinyls for me but then set them down and when he came back another dude had snagged them! However, one LP that hadn’t been scooped up was the Five Pennies soundtrack. James texted me to see if I wanted it. YES!  And now here it is!

This is a sweet LP. Danny Kaye and Louis Armstrong seem to really be having fun, on a level I don’t tend to hear in music too much, anymore. And oh, to hear Armstrong’s horn, any day of the week, baby! Yeah! At one point, Kaye mimic’s Louis’ vocals drunkenly, then later Louis switches to the horn and Kaye says “He’s switched weapons! Where’s my horn?” Haha awesome. Some of this stuff is old standards, even mashed together, while some of it hilarious stuff clearly from the movie (I haven’t seen it yet, but I will!). All of what I heard of it is quite good. Sadly, there’s a slight skip in one track of side 2, despite my having cleaned it well prior to play. But! No matter! The rest of it played just fine, and I had a hoot.

The jazz kid in me sat up and smiled. Thanks heaps, James!

* We also gave her a homemade strawberry/rhubarb pie. That also tends to go over well.

Grail List Successes!

Grail List Successes!

The Preamble:

This recent trip to Toronto has yielded some KMA Grail List finds! This fills me with so much glee. There’s nothing better than being able to find things for other people, especially things they’ve sought for a long time. That’s what the KMA is all about, folks. Community! Music! Yes!

The Tease:

I’m just putting this up here as a bit of a teaser, so that the recipients can do a big reveal for themselves. But suffice it to say that J. is soon to be receiving goodness from his lists! YES! And Mike will actually be getting multiple items. Now, these weren’t exactly on his Grail List, but the one was an item that if I found it, great. The others he had no way of knowing what I’d find until I texted him pictures… and from what I can gather, he’s pretty damn excited! Now, he’s already spilled the beans about one of them (in his excitement)…

Sharing A Successful Find:

I can reveal that I found a DVD for our friend (here in my town) Susan. She had wanted a copy of the Danny Kaye film The Five Pennies on DVD, and has been looking for it for ages. It’s tougher to find because it’s Out Of Print. She mentioned it to me, because she knows I would never stop looking for it. It was on the KMA Grail List until this most recent trip to the city. I found it for her!

In the last couple of years, I’d found several copies online, even Amazon had it. But most of them were coded for Region 2, and here in North America we are Region 1. A few copies online were fetching up to $70 for the DVD, and she would not pay that (neither would I).

On this trip, I actually found two copies. One was at BMV, and they wanted $39.99. That’s a lot less than $70, but I left it and thought I’d contact her before buying it. I never got the chance to contact her… Next I went to Sonic Boom and, on my way out of the store, I just happened to ask the guy at the desk if they keep an inventory of their DVD stock (they do), and they had a copy of the film! And it was $9.99!! I bought it so fast, believe me.

Susan is gonna be thrilled. I don’t know exactly how long she’s been seeking this DVD but it has been a long, long time. In truth, I was probably looking for it more dilligently than she has been, but still. I phoned her and said I had a present for her (she has no idea what it’ll be), so we’re going to meet up next Sunday for breakfast. Can’t wait to see the look on her face when she sees it!

James’ Expensive Find:

I did also find an item that my KMA brother James wanted. It wasn’t on the Grail List, but he’d mentioned it and if I found it, great. It’s the WWF Wrestling 2LP set from Record Store Day 2015. I found multiple copies but, sadly, it was $49.99, and James said , and I quote, he “wouldn’t pay so much for something so bad.” Apparently these are old LPs, re-released, and they contain songs sung by the wrestlers. Imagine Hulk Hogan singing. Oh my. Now, James is a fan of the wrasslin’ from waaaaay back, and I understand why he would think it’s hilariously bad, but to me that just sounds awesome! I will still keep my eyes peeled because you never know, someone else may have it for cheaper.

In Sum:

The KMA Grail List works, folks! If you have items you’re having a hard time finding (in your local shops or online), email us your list, we’ll add them in, and then all of us can use the Master List as a resource while we look for stuff for each other! KMA COMMUNITY!
