Listen Up Frosh 2001

This looks like it’s some sort of promo freebie, given to students who agree to sign up for approval on a GM VISA card. I don’t even know what possessed me to buy this CD. Probably it was scooped up in a pile of better albums, kept simply because I recognized several tracks. But after playing it now, I realize I’ll not likely ever play it again. Here are my notes, made while listening:

Chumbawumba – Tubthumping: Skipped this, to avoid having it in my head all day.
Smashmouth – Walkin’ On The Sun: see Chumbawumba.
Spin Doctors – Two Princes: Wow, this really dates itself, doesn’t it!
Matthew Good Band – Hello Time Bomb: alright, this I still love. Best song here.
Stealer’s Wheel – Stuck In The Middle With You: Still fun, but overplayed.
Boney M – Rasputin: Started, but skipped. Ugh.
Vengaboys – We Like To Party: And I like to skip your crap track. Next.
N-Trance – Do Ya Think I’m Sexy: No, I don’t. Totally unnecessary cover.
The Buggles – Video Killed The Radio Star: Cool track, but also way overplayed.
Dexy’s Midnight Runners – Come On Eileen: see Buggles (above).
The Foundations – Build Me Up Buttercup: can’t stand this after the Goops’ version.
Don McLean – American Pie: WTF is this doing here?

In Sum: All that was missing was Lovefool and Barbie Girl. I’ll be ditching this.

  3. I remember these type of promo CDs. My sister got a similar one that had similar songs that you list above, but it was a promo CD given during Frosh Week by another car manufacturer (promoting the Dodge/Plymouth/Chrysler Neon, I think) They just gave them away. “And please buy a Neon…” haha

    • Well, it’s a terrible idea, and sort of an insult to the intelligence of your prospective customer. What’s the thinking here, that they’ll gladly spend about $20,000 on a (sorry if anyone drives one) piece of shit car if we give them an obviously slapped together by amateurs mixed CD of songs? I think not.

  4. But how far can you Frisbee it? that’s the real question.

  5. Jesus Murphy. Almost every song I hated at the record store in one place. I’d keep Matt Good and ditch the rest.

  6. There used to be a whole series of Frosh albums, as I seem to recall back in university. This appears to be missing “Home for a rest”.

    • Hey thanks for the follow!

Wow, I’d forgotten about those other Frosh CDs, would this have been part of that series? Interesting. Well, it still doesn’t explain why James is so hot and bothered about it. I still think there’s more to THAT story!

And you’re right! I’d have thought Home For A Rest would have been on every mixed CD from the period, by default!

      • Not that there’s anything wrong with that. HFAR is a great track.

I’d steer clear of that James character if I were you. He didn’t seem right in the head.

        • Haha nope, no worries there, man. James is one of the best guys I know. I’ll admit I’m mystified by his need for this CD, but surely he has his reasons. And yup, HFAR is indeed a great track, essential party music.
