What a joyous noise!
It’s a prog rock metal pop punk latin jazz freak out, and this is a really satisfying album. The band is insanely tight, restlessly shifting tempos and moods, often within each song. The dude singing sometimes sounds like Geddy, then other times not at all. They’re like shapeshifters!
It sounds, to me, like a band that the lead singer tyrant of the band I was in used to also play with… except that the Mars Volta are really fucking good and that other band was really fucking not.
These guys really went for it, and the results are brilliant. Fully recommended for the good headphones when you’re ready to have your brain melted and your spirits lifted.
I need to give these guys a chance. Their album covers are cool, odd and disturbing.

I’m all for recommending it, but if you’re wearing a hat make sure you’re prepared to hold onto it! That album’s an awesome wild ride!

Powerful stuff – dense and complex and very loud (even when played softly).

Yes, yes, and yes! Man, these guys are hitting it big for this post, lots of fans out there (and rightly so)!

Is this song on here? I like this one!

It is! That’s part of Take The Veil Cerpin Taxt, which is the last track on the album!
Also, that girl’s crazy. I don’t care how tired you are, you go see Pixies and Mars Volta! And then come home for sex! Silly girl.

This was an early one in the 1001 for me – was also a big fan!
Tracks 2 & 3 I remember being particularly strong

Yes! Looks like lots of Mars Volta fans in these parts, and that’s a good thing. This album is crazy awesome. I get the feeling that when I play it again, I’m gonna hear new things I totally missed the first spins.

And was this the one Flea & Chad Smith played on too?

Looks to me like Flea and John Frusciante… Still, good on you for knowing that!

I like this one, but I preferred At The Drive-in as a band.

Oooft. At The Drive-In were good. That Jools Holland performance … perfect chaos.

He’s a bad influence. If this was school my parental units would have told me to stay away from him!

It’s the fact that he’s selling vinyls from the back of a sketchy looking van at the playground that worries parents the most. 🙂

What an album and what a band. These guys consistently blew my mind with their retro-futuristic sound (is that a thing?) and their seemingly endless supply of energy. I became a fan for life the first time I heard “De-Loused…” Hopefully your post will inspire others to check them out.

Hey thanks Rich! Yeah this CD was really great. I don’t think I was quite ready for just how crazy awesome busy it is, but once I got strapped in, there was no way I was gonna let go!
