Jake Bugg – On My One

Belated review of my Father’s Day gift. On his third full length, the same soulful acoustic Dylanisms and intriguing, strong songwriting are still here. An artist must grow, and a couple of tracks are drum machine pop r&b, even a hip hop-like track. It may alienate fans of earlier works, but some never want anything to change. These are just natural extensions of his sound, an exploration mission. Bugg remains a fascinating, unapologetic artist growing stronger as he goes. Fully recommended.

  1. Drum machine pop r & b and hip-hop like.
You lost me from machine onward.

    • Haha it’s not really that bad. Besides, 8 of the 11 tracks here are more like his older stuff, so it’s all good. I applaud him for trying new things!

      • I have not heard one note from Jake Bugg, but saw this album at the record store and remembered that you really like him. So I thought about it but never bought it. Where would I start with his discography?

        • We do really like him. He’s my daughter’s favourite, still to this day. We’ve been playing Pink Floyd in the car, and they like it well enough, but after a while she always says ‘can we put Jake Bugg back on?’ 🙂

He’s only got the three records. The first two, Jake Bugg, and Shangri La, are both really great.

        • Also, if you ever see any of his singles or EPs in your travels, I wants them the precioussssss!!

  2. I was going to say – wasn’t one of your kids a fan of Jake Bugg? Answer found above!

  3. Na. Still doesn’t do it for me. Lot of praise out there for him, but there’s also praise for Ed Sheeran. No thanks.

  4. I may give this one a listen. Thanks for the recommendation.
